DJ Tech : New Traktor and Serato Controllers from Pioneer (DDJ-T1, DDJ-S1)

Although widely rumored, its looking official, Pioneer is finally jumping on board the controller craze. They have been working on 2 models, 1 for Traktor (DDJ-T1) and one for Serato (DDJ-S1). Both are basically identical in layout but equipped with specific features for each software. We have known this was coming for a while but Pioneer did an amazing job of keeping it from leaking, especially considering they showed it to everyone under the sun. Read on for more speculation and a new record low volume of factual data!

DDJ-T1 CONTROLLER

The Pioneer DDJ-T1 controller is clearly an amalgamation of their CDJ-200 line into the controller world. Throw in a 4 channel mixer and depending on the feature set/software bundle- you may have the first real competition for the S4. Considering the new CDJ-200’s run around $300 each and a decent 4 channel mixer is at least $400, this should represent a really good value for new djs looking to maintain a Pioneer work flow in the digital domain.

The real question here is whether or not Pioneer struck a deal with NI to include a new Traktor Pro software with S4 features (more info tomorrow on that). If they did, then that means there will be real competition in the market place for that platform. If not, and NI holds on to the S4 feature set for themselves, then I doubt the controller will make it much farther.

NOTABLE DETAILS

  • the knobs and buttons look noticeably plastic
  • based on the size of the jog wheels relative to the transport buttons, its full CDj-20 sized, which means a wide controller
  • needle drop touch strip
  • auto loop encoder matches the s4 (look for this to become standard)
  • there are mic and headphone jacks so a built-in sound card is evident
  • the top photo is probably a very good 3 render, while the photo above looks like an early stage prototype.

DDJ-S1 CONTROLLER

This one has the potential to be really interesting because its rumored to be working with Serato Scratch, which means it might be the very first all in one controller/sound card combo fully supported by Scratch (transport control without requiring the SL1/2/3boxes). Most mobile djs are stuck using Serato Scratch in the club and then Itch in the mobile territory. They really all just want a mobile controller for Serato that does NOT require a SL box. If Pioneer manages to be the first to create that reality, they will kill it in sales. If not, its still looking like a great alternative to the popular vci-300.

NOTABLE DETAILS

  • 2 channel mixer (itch supports 4 decks but Serato only 2 without the right hardware)
  • needle drop touch strip has LED feedback of position
  • overall look and work flow is a much closer match to traditional CDJ equipment than the DDJ-T1
  • VU meters here but not on the DDJ-T1

Music : Rihanna Breaks UK Chart Record, Matches Elvis Presley

With her Drake-featuring single 'What's My Name?' hitting No. 1 this week, Rihanna has made history as the first female solo artist to notch five No. 1 hits on the U.K. singles charts in as many consecutive years. The last solo artist to make a similar record was Elvis Presley, who did so from 1957-63.

While 'What's My Name?' tops the singles charts, the red hot R&B singer's recent album, 'Loud,' is also the No. 1 U.K. album, marking the second time Rihanna has simultaneously owned both the U.K. singles and albums charts, after her mega-hit 'Umbrella' and 'Good Girl Gone Bad' album similarly dominated in 2007

"Another week! LOUD and What's my Name are the #1 ALBUM and SINGLE respectively!!!" Rihanna tweeted about her achievement. "UK you are on FYAH!!! Rah Rah! THANK U! Where my #UKNavy."

In addition to 'What's My Name?,' Rihanna has two other singles, 'Only Girl (In The World)' and 'Who's That Chick,' in the top ten this week, and her album 'Loud,' which dropped in November, has also sold impressively, clearing 900,000 copies in the U.K. alone.

Rihanna recently filmed a video for her next single 'Fly,' which features Nicki Minaj, and will be making her film debut in 2012 with 'Battleship.'

Health : The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths

Sugar Makes Kids Hyper
Sugar Makes Kids Hyper The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
This is false. In their studies done to debunk many of these medical myths, Dr. Vreeman and Dr. Carroll ( both pediatricians at Riley Hospital for Children) say that in "at least 12 double-blinded, randomized, controlled trials, scientists have examined how children react to diets containing different levels of sugar. None of these studies, not even studies looking specifically at children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, could detect any differences in behavior between the children who had sugar and those who did not."

The most amazing thing is that in studies in which parents *think* their children have consumed sugar, parents rate their children's behavior as more hyperactive, even if in fact no sugar was consumed.

You Can Sweat Toxins Out of Your Body
You Can Sweat Toxins Out of Your Body The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
Our sweat is the human body's cooling system. We would overheat and die within minutes without it. The things that strain toxins out of our bodies are the kidneys and the liver, and they do a helluva job (thanks you guys! --and sorry about last weekend!). Fad exercises that make you sweat are just fads... or a way to lose water weight so you can pretend like you workouts are working better.

Sweat contains water and trace minerals, and that's it. No toxins, no germs, no bad spirits. Just stinky water.

Catching a Cold in Cold Weather
Catching a Cold in Cold Weather The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
This is my favorite one. I've heard it said so many times by so many people... and I think its kind of impossible at this point to tell folks they are wrong. The cold virus is commonly caused by a rhinovirus... which gets into the respiratory system. Once there, the virus binds to the epithelial cells which line the respiratory system just FIFTEEN MINUTES after entering the body. Our body reacts to this invasion by releasing inflammatory molecules to the site of the invasion. Plus, it makes extra mucus to remove alien particles from the body -- hence sneezing and coughing.

Temperature has no effect on this process one way or another. Neither does wet hair.

If you ask why colds are more common in the winter, that's as easy as pointing out that people spend much more time indoors in cold weather - in closer proximity. This makes it easier for the virus to spread.

Hair and Fingernails Keep Growing After You Die

Many people, even doctors, have assumed this belief was true. But when you think about it, it can't possibly be valid. This myth likely persists because of an optical illusion -- and because it's just so creepy. When the body dries out after death, the soft tissue like skin retracts. Fingernails appear more prominent... same with hair.... the skin shrinks back and the hair becomes more ... there.

The Flu Vaccine Gives You The Flu
The Flu Vaccine Gives You The Flu The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
Fllu vaccines do *not* contain complete viruses capable of causing the Flu.

If you caught the flu after your shot, odds are good you caught it waiting to get the vaccine, or you already had it and began showing symptoms shortly after.

Note: The only vaccine that contains the actual live (but weakened) virus is FluMist, which is sprayed up your nose rather than injected. Theoretically it may cause a mild case of influenza.

Starve a Fever and Feed a Cold
Starve a Fever and Feed a Cold The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
It will not help to lower your fever if you do not eat. In fact, limiting your food intake while you are sick hinders the healing process. Don't force yourself to eat if you don't feel good, but don't starve yourself if you're hungry and can't remember "which one lets you eat". It is very important that you maintain hydration by drinking a lot of liquids, as fever promotes the loss of fluids.

You Should Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
You Should Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
This one can be pretty much be traced back to a 1945 recommendation from the Nutrition Council that a person consume the equivalent of 8 glasses of fluid a day. This is not to say that drinking water is bad for you, not at all. You just don't need 8 glasses. Part of the Council's recommendation has been lost over the years -- the large amount of fluid contained in food, especially fruits and vegetables, and other kinds of drinks should be included in the recommended 64-ounce total.

Drinking excess water can be dangerous, resulting in water intoxication and even death. Remember that girl who died from drinking too much water to win that radio contest a few years ago?

Wait 30 Minutes After Eating Before Swimming
Wait 30 Minutes After Eating Before Swimming The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
The body does divert blood flow from the muscles to the gastrointestinal system to spur digestion after eating, but not in amounts that diminish muscle function. Not to say you should finish thanksgiving dinner and then race for the pool. Swim when you're comfortable -- no need to set the egg timer.

Milk Generates Mucus
Milk Generates Mucus The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
In a study of 330 patients, nearly two out of three believed milk increases phlegm production. But it'€™s not true. In one experiment, volunteers were infected with the cold virus, and some of them drank a lot of milk as well. The weight of the nasal secretions did not increase in those who drank more milk, nor was it associated with cough or congestion.

Swallowed Gum Takes 7 Years to Pass Through Your Body
Swallowed Gum Takes 7 Years to Pass Through Your Body The Top 10 Untrue Medical Myths Anything
There is an ingredient in gum, called gum base, that is indigestible, but that only means that your body cannot extract nutrients out of it or dissolve it. It passes through you in 2-3 days.

So if you swallow your gum, no worries...€“ it won't be your problem in a few days, it will be the Sanitation Department's.

Social Network : Man stabbed by girlfriend for keeping his facebook page private

Good Reason to Kill #12: Tried to Hide His Facebook Profile

Thumbnail As FindLaw's headline for this item suggests ("Despite Facebook Stabbing, Couple Stays Friends"), this actually ended reasonably well, as these things go.

Reportedly, the argument was caused by a 22-year-old Indianapolis man's refusal to let his girlfriend see his Facebook page. The report did not say why he was reluctant to do this, but the number of options is probably limited. The argument, which had begun upstairs, then moved downstairs, "and it was then that McVey says she accidentally slashed Davenport with a knife that she got from the kitchen." (Accidental slashings like these are all too common and could be prevented if manufacturers would stop making these defectively sharp kitchen knives.) Ultimately neither party was charged, and according to the report, "[t]he two remain Facebook friends." So maybe whether they remain actual friends is not entirely settled.

Bicycles - Ego-Kits declares victory over nature, gravity with its E-Powered Downhill Bike Kit

In a move that is sure to excite the outdoorsman (or outdoors-lady, as it were) in us all, German outfit Ego-Kits has unveiled the E-Powered Downhill Bike Kit so you don't have to go through all that pesky exercise getting to the top of the mountain to enjoy the thrill of bombing back down. The kit comes with a 1200-watt aluminum motor that mounts under the down tube of 70 percent of downhill bike models, a battery pack (contained within an included backpack), charger, controller module, crankset, chain, and twist grip throttle with a battery charge indicator. We don't know the price or when the system will officially go on sale, but we do know that when mounted on a mountain bike, it looks cooler than other, more pedestrian electric bikes we've seen previously. Jump after the break to see the Ego-Kit in action.

Rides - Chevy Volt, Ford Explorer, Named Car & Truck of the Year

Just a couple of years ago, we were all worried if the US automakers could produce cars we would ever want to buy again, let alone cars that would be the best in their classes. But that is exactly what is happening, and 2011 could be the year American automakers enter a new era in engineering and design leadership. The Chevy Volt, which has already picked up numerous car of the year awards joins the Ford Explorer for Truck of the Year which was announcing today during the opening of the North American International Auto Show. Congrats to Ford and Chevy.
