The Mini Countryman makes no sense. It’s the biggest Mini.
Say what?
It’s a crossover, with at least a trace of off-road juice in the mix. Which makes about as much sense as a big Mini.
And, as everyone knows, the only way to take a slightly illogical thing and make it perfect is to just run with the illogical theme, and make it ridiculous.
Introducing: the Mini Paceman. It’s just a concept today, but the parts are in place to move it to production fairly quickly if the crowd at the Detroit Auto Show next month likes it. The Pacement is basically a Countryman with two doors lopped off, and all of the go-fast bits BMW’s Mini division could find thrown into the drivetrain. That means the John Cooper Works turbo’d four, the ALL4 all-wheel-drive, and though the press release they sent us doesn’t say it, we’re sure there’s the same crisp 6-speed stick we’ve grown accustomed to inside.
Quilted leather seats set it off nicely, and in the drawing Mini sent on (the only image anyone has so far of the interior), it seems to come with Martinis.
Mini tells us it’s “urban and masculine.” We think it’s…well… a big mini, with fewer doors than most, that should be very quick.
And no, that makes no sense at all…but somehow you like it, don’t you?
