Sports : Serena Williams hospitalized with pulmonary embolism

Serena Williams, who has been out with an injured foot since last year’s Wimbledon, has been hospitalized with a pulmonary embolism. The clot was discovered on Monday after a return visit to L.A. from New York.

“Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation,” the rep says in an exclusive statement.

Serena has been in and out of a cast with that mysterious foot injury she suffered at a bar with friends while celebrating her aforementioned Wimbledon victory. According to her, a piece of glass was lodged in her foot and required surgery. Some eight months later and she’s still battling this rogue glass.
As far as this blood clot is concerned, allow me to play internet doctor for a moment. Yes, completely healthy people can get pulmonary embolisms, especially if they are flying a lot and are inactive.
But something just doesn’t seem right in this whole thing. For Serena’s sake and for the sake of women’s tennis, we hope she makes a full recovery. But considering her reluctance to return to the game with a foot injury, this clot might set her back even further.
