The 2012 Camaro ZL1 – the most technically advanced Camaro ever -- is clearly the most interesting thing to happen to Chevrolet recently. It will arrive about six months from now so all that we could do is take the time to discuss what we’ve learned about this model so far. Chevrolet has recently teased that it will deliver more power than the 550hp estimate given earlier.
Chief engineer Al Oppenheiser made the announcement in the official introduction of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 at the Camaro Homecoming, which took place next to the Oshawa Assembly Plant where the regular Camaro is rolled out. He said that this model will have higher output than the Cadillac CTS-V. Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2012, according to Camaro5. It has also been announced that the ZL1 will have an optional automatic transmission and will be faster and have more consistent lap times since it was equipped with the Corvette ZR1’s Performance Traction Management system.
Viewing these details makes us think that it could rival the Boss 302 but we’ll have to know the pricing too to know for sure. Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, said that the Camaro ZL1 is a car that can’t be compared to anything else in this segment in terms of design and technology. He said further that this model is named after the “most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."
