Rides : Nevada Offers First License for Google Self-Driving Car

Monday, May 7th, Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles approved the nation’s first autonomous vehicle license.

This means that Google’s self-driving cars will be soon seen on the roads of Nevada, a move which came after officials tested the self-driving cars on the highways, in Carson City neighborhoods and on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Last year Nevada was the first in the U.S. to authorize self-driven cars for the state’s roads. A law which went into effect on March 1st this year.
Google’s self-driven cars feature radar sensors, video cameras, lasers and a database of information gathered from cars driven manually. The DMV licensed model is a Toyota Prius which Google modified adding its driver-less technology, which was developed by Stanford professor and Google Vice President Sebastian Thrun. Nevada also takes into consideration to license self-driven vehicle owned by the members of the public. Other states are considering the possibility of approving autonomous cars, among which Google’s home state of California.

“The vast majority of vehicle accidents are due to human error. Through the use of computers, sensors and other systems, an autonomous vehicle is capable of analyzing the driving environment more quickly and operating the vehicle more safely,” California state Senator Alex Padilla said in March when he introduced that state’s autonomous car legislation.
