EDM News : Why The Swedish House Mafia Is Splitting

After announcing that the Swedish House Mafia is bowing out later in the year, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello got on the phone to Radio 1’s Pete Tong for a debrief. In the conversation, which you can listen to below, the three members agree that they’ve taken the project to the biggest stages possible and it’s time to move on. “We’re still trying to digest what we have done to ourselves,” quips Axwell at one point. Angello also points out that by trying to stage the most spectacular shows, with serious production budgets to match, the Swedes haven’t been making a profit from touring. You might take that one with a grain of salt.
“I think the confusion was because we didn’t go out with a big press release or 1000 interviews,” Steve Angello tells Tong in the interview. “We’ve had such an amazing run, it just feels right. We’re going to go out with a bang, and we just see this as the end of an amazing journey that we’ve done together as friends. It just feels right.”
Axwell stressed that there’s been no falling out between the three Mafiosos. “It’s so easy to stay content with the machine that is the Swedish House Mafia, but we’ve always been about challenging ourselves and doing different things. We felt we’d taken it as far – or even beyond – where we thought we could go with it. Maybe it’s time to do something different now. I don’t know what’s bigger than Milton Keynes Bowl or Friends Arena here in Stockholm. We didn’t want to end up repeating ourselves.”
The trio is expected to announce its final shows in August, but just how big that tour is going to be is still a work in progress. To round it out, Tong asks Ingrosso why a Swedish House Mafia album has never materialised. “We’re always working on music,” Ingrosso says. “There will be a farewell single. You never know if we’re going back in the studio again. We have about 28 unfinished demos, but you never know if they’re going to be finished or not.”
