No. 1: Cecconi’s Miami Beach

 

There is no sexier patio in Miami than the canopied courtyard at Cecconi’s, where trees are strung with white lights and populated by artfully selected varieties of miniscule birds. The ground-floor restaurant is the only one of Soho Beach House’s multiple dining spots that is open to people who are neither club members nor hotel guests, and the “public” misses no opportunity to crowd into the breezy outdoor space and enjoy chef Sergio Sigala’s steak, seafood and Italian dishes.

 

No. 2: Pax Miami

 

 

As a relatively young city, Miami doesn’t have much in the way of old factories to convert into lofts or warehouses and then to turn into nightclubs, but the owners of PAX (Performing Arts Exchange) have taken over a former distribution center of the Miami Herald and set up a new bar-meets-art-house. Former Transit Lounge music scout Roxanne Scalia has curated a spring/summer lineup of events that includes a Words and Wine series and local talents like Big Brooklyn Red, Suenalo and troubadour Brendan O’Hara. 

No. 3: The Fontainebleau Miami Beach

 

 

 

Hit this massive resort during peak hours, and you’d think it’s still late 2008 -- the year when this former Rat Pack hangout reopened with a bash that culminated in a Victoria’s Secret fashion show. The property has since faced public financial woes, but that hasn’t gotten in the way of the festivities. When its star-studded pool parties wind down, a slew of top restaurants offer thriving bar scenes. Megaclub LIV has no trouble filling its over-18,000-square-foot space with revelers, and Arkadia -- the newest of the Fontainebleau’s on-site nightclubs -- provides an Ibiza-style experience to a slightly younger set.

Located 50 stories above ground at the Viceroy Miami, Club 50 offers what is perhaps the best of both worlds in Miami: a sexy, South Beach-style club scene with the sweeping views that come with a spot in one of Brickell’s tallest high-rises. The Epic Hotel restaurant serves legendary cocktails on its 16th-floor terrace, where cigar smokers can also score free Camacho Cigars and thus help create the steamy, smoky ambiance of Cuba’s heyday. 

 

No. 7: db Bistro Moderne at the JW Marriott Marquis

 

 

We’re not alone in our contention that the Miami outpost of chef Daniel Boulud’s db Bistro Moderne serves the best dirty martini in the city. Response to Boulud’s Americanized French bistro food, on the other hand, has been mixed: There are ardent fans, patrons outraged at the prices and diners who were favorably impressed but feel that it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. No matter what your take, db is still the place to be right now, as just about everyone trickles in to render their own verdict on a restaurant whose opening was one of the biggest in recent years.

In addition to DeLucie’s power-dining scene and well-received “modern American” fare, the velvet-roped Raleigh is the site of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in July, with the models who are stationed in Miami reigning over the festivities. 

 

No. 10: Makoto

 

 

Even within the glittery confines of Bal Harbour Shops, brand-new Japanese-style bar Makoto has made a splash. New York City’s Morimoto and Buddakan’s sister restaurant, it is what you would expect from powerhouse restaurateur Stephen Starr’s debut venture in Miami: a sexy, high-walled, dimly lit space where the 12-seat sushi bar that wraps around an open kitchen and the dark-wood booths are currently the hottest tables in town. Namesake chef Makoto Okuwa’s cuisine, exemplified by the tea-crusted tuna tataki and paper-thin slices of Kobe beef, lives up to the hype.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sports : Jack McKeon Lights Up a Cigar in the Dugout After Florida Marlins 11th Straight Loss

Nearly six years ago Jack McKeon retired from a 30-year managerial career in Major League Baseball. Last week, while watching his granddaughter’s softball game in North Carolina, the phone rang with a job offer: Interim Manager of the barely-breathing Florida Marlins, the same franchise he won the World Series with in 2003 (the first year he came out of retirement). Last night McKeon suited up on a Marlins uniform with No. 25 and came out of retirement again at 80 years old, making him the second-oldest manager in major-league history and the oldest man in the league since 1950 (Connie Mack, the legendary Philadelphia Athletics' manager, worked in baseball until the age of 87). The Marlins still lost their 11th in a row to the Angels, but that didn't stop him from light up a signature cigar in the dugout. Boss move? Yep, and man I can't stand the Marlins.

The media fanfare and not managing since 2005 isn't stopping him from putting up with crap from players. For example, yesterday he benched Marlins' star shortstop Hanley Ramirez for not hustling and showing up late to a team meeting. His rationale? "If you try to be (the players’) friend that will get you fired," he told the Palm Beach Post.

Ramirez, the three-time All-Star arrived late to the clubhouse Monday, showing up after McKeon called the team together for a 3:30 p.m. meeting, according to people in the organization. When asked if he knew why he was not in the lineup Ramirez said “no,” before joining his teammates to stretch.


When McKeon was asked if there was a reason Ramirez is not in the lineup he said: “Yeah, because I didn’t put him in there.” He added that he didn’t like the way Ramirez was running on Sunday. McKeon was in North Carolina on Sunday at a softball game in which his granddaughter was playing. Ramirez was going 0-for-3 in St. Petersburg against the Rays, dropping his average to .201.

You can't help but admire an man with the balls put his foot down and say, "I'm not here to deal with your melodramatic bullshit." Yeah, he's an easy target being old and all. But how can you not help but like an grizzly attitude like that?

WTF?? Florida Toll Road Sued for Holding Motorists Hostage

Federal class action lawsuit against Florida toll roads for unlawfully detaining motorists who pay cash.
 
A group of motorists earlier this month filed a federal class action lawsuit against Florida's toll road system for detaining motorists who attempt to pay the tolls with cash. About 600 miles worth of toll roads and bridges are under the jurisdiction of The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which hands operational duties over to the private firm Faneuil, Inc., which is responsible for the toll collectors. The complaint charges both firms with false imprisonment and other civil rights violations.

"For approximately four years, FDOT and Faneuil have engaged in a practice of detaining motorists and their passengers on the Turnpike System until such motorists provided certain personal information in exchange for their release," attorney James C. Valenti wrote on behalf of the plaintiffs. "The motorists and passengers have been detained without their consent and without legal justification."

Under FDOT policies, motorists who pay with $50 bills, and sometimes even $5 bills, are not given permission to proceed until the toll collector fills out a "Bill Detection Report" with data about the motorist's vehicle and details from his driver's license. Those unwilling to provide personal information to the toll collector are offered no alternative because the toll collector will not open the barrier, preventing the car from moving forward. FDOT policy does not allow passengers to exit their vehicle, and backing up is illegal and usually impossible while other cars wait behind. Some of those paying in cash object to the idea of carrying the SunPass toll transponder on privacy grounds, but the use of cash is discouraged because it increases operating costs.

"The policy of detaining motorists without their consent and without legal justification extended throughout the Turnpike System and was so permanent and well settled that it constituted custom, practice or policy which has the force of law and rises to the level of deliberate indifference to plaintiff's and class members' constitutional rights," Valenti wrote. "It is believed that Defendants will continue the widespread practice of unlawful detentions and will continue to force vehicle occupants to provide personal information in exchange for their release, all in violation of plaintiffs' and class plaintiffs' Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights."

An estimated 262,800 drivers have been detained since October 2006. The lawsuit seeks an injunction prohibiting Faneuil and FDOT from further detaining motorists. Neither FDOT nor Faneuil has answered the February 8 complaint.

Uncle Luke Announces Run for Miami Mayor

Hip-hop icon-turned-newspaper columnist, Uncle Luke, has announced that he will run for Mayor of Miami-Dade County.

In an extended edition of his Miami New Times column, the former 2 Live Crew rapper opened up about his surprising decision to enter the political realm. "I've thought about running for public office before, but someone would always end up talking me out of it, saying, 'We have this good person here, he will do good for the community,' so I always backed out," he said. "But I'd end up frustrated because they didn't do anything. I'd give them ideas and they would just tell me what they wanted to hear.

"I get in my car, ride around Liberty City, and everything looks the same as when I was in the neighborhood growing up," he continued, detailing the factors that motivated him to run for mayor. "I see the same crimes in the same areas. Officers and residents are still getting killed in the community I grew up in. I go to a city like Atlanta that has sensible affordable housing, and no one is being murdered. I go to Miami International Airport and see the same construction that has been going on for like a hundred years. All of that frustrates the hell out of me. Why aren't we getting it right in Miami-Dade? Why is our government only serving one set of people? That's what is pushing me to run."

In his column, Luke has often addressed local politics, and even sounded off on voter turnout in the Miami area this past November. And, although his political background is limited, Luke says he'd run his office much like he ran his music label. "When I ran my record company, every year we would first go over what was making revenue for us and beef that side up," he said. "Then we would cut the areas where we were not generating revenue. The first place we looked was payroll. I'll do the same with the county budget." He also plans on taxing strippers.

The former musician has made headlines recently for his involvement in the community. In November, he was appointed as the assistant football coach for Miami Central High School. Luke, however, is not the first rapper to announce his quest for a political title this year. Chicago rapper Rhymefest is vying for a spot as one of the Windy City's fifty aldermen.
