GM
is the first automaker to announce support for Apple’s new “Eyes Free”
mode for the iPhone, as the Chevrolet Spark and Sonic will be among the
first vehicles compatible with Siri.
It has roughly 60 commands, which is not that much, but Siri could definitely add a long-list of commands for those who have an iOS device.
Eyes Free should resemble how other hands-free packages work on automobiles. An Eyes Free button will be included on the steering wheel, so users can activate and speak to any iPhone or iPad that is connected over Bluetooth. Siri will do all the processing work.
No word on when we will be seeing this integration, but according to reports (via GM Authority) we can expect to hear more about it within the next 12 months.
9to5 Mac reports that Eyes Free will be part of an entire hands-free package that when activated, will connect through Bluetooth. It’s expected to include some kind of microphone for making quick phone calls that will run through the car’s speaker system.
It’s important to note that Eyes Free just isn’t for the iPhone — it’s also available on the iPad, although you won’t be able to make phone calls.
