Reggie Wayne's Night Off didn't quite go as planned on
Saturday, when a hotel valet allegedly stole his Bentley and took it on a
drunken joyride before getting picked up by police early Sunday
morning.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Wayne left his 2007 Bentley with a valet at The Westin Hotel at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. He woke up the next morning to find his keys and the car missing.
A supervisor noted that a valet, identified as Gunner Belcher, left
the hotel at 9 p.m. Saturday but failed to clock out. A garage security
officer told authorities he had seen a man matching Belcher's description take the Bentley from the lot late that night, WISH-TV reports.
Belcher, 21, was arrested at about 2 a.m. Sunday for driving while
intoxicated. WISH-TV notes the valet failed several sobriety tests and
claimed he was Wayne's "cousin by marriage." Police confirmed the car
was in fact the missing Bentley, which has since been returned to the
Colts star.
Many Internet users have noted the similarity between Belcher's blunder and the iconic scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off,
in which the group leaves a Ferrari in a garage only to have the valets
take it out on a joyride around Chicago. The scene was one of many from
the film recreated for a recent Honda commercial starring Matthew Broderick that aired during Super Bowl XLVI.
As Colts punter Pat McAfee
pointed out, the entire incident is all the more impressive given
Wayne's stellar performance on the field just a few hours later. The
Indianapolis wide receiver hauled in six passes for 64 yards and a
touchdown in the Colts' 27-23 win over the Titans:
