Sports : NBA All-Star Rosters 2013: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant Make Starting Lineups

Kobe

NEW YORK (AP) — Kobe Bryant has been voted to his NBA-record 15th consecutive All-Star start, leading four Los Angeles players into next month's game.
Lakers teammate Dwight Howard and the Clippers' Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will join Bryant in the Western Conference lineup for the Feb. 17 game in Houston. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, the MVP of last year's game, rounds out the five.
Kevin Garnett held off Chris Bosh in fan balloting, giving the East two Boston Celtics and two Miami Heat players. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will represent the defending champions and receive passes from Rajon Rondo. New York's Carmelo Anthony is the other starter.
Bryant finished with 1,591,437 votes, edging James by about 7,800 to finish as the leading vote-getter and break a tie with Shaquille O'Neal, Jerry West and Karl Malone for the most consecutive starting nods.
The NBA's leading scorer is a four-time MVP of the All-Star game and last year became its career scoring leader.
Garnett beat Bosh, who took to Twitter to stump for votes in the final days of balloting, by about 25,000 votes. He tied Bryant and O'Neal for second all-time with his 15th selection behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was elected to 19 games.
It's the second straight year that Los Angeles teams will make up four players. Last year it was Bryant, Paul, Griffin and Andrew Bynum, who was dealt to Philadelphia in part of the deal that sent Howard from Orlando to Los Angeles.
The ballot changed this year, eliminating the center position. Fans were required to vote for three frontcourt players and two guards.
They picked an interesting mix in the East. Anthony and Garnett exchanged words during a game on Jan. 7 and Anthony was suspended a game by the NBA when he tried to confront Garnett afterward in the tunnel area and by the team bus.
Rondo was injured in the playoffs two years ago after getting tangled up with Wade and landing awkwardly on his arm, part of what's become a tense rivalry between the Celtics and Heat.
Reserves will be announced next Thursday. Coaches will vote for seven players in their conferences: two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position, and can't vote for a player on their own team.

MLB : Milton Bradley Charged With Domestic Abuse, Faces Up To 13 Years In Prison

Milton Bradley

Former Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners outfielder Milton Bradley has been charged with abusing his estranged wife and faces up to 13 years in jail if convicted, city prosecutors announced Friday.
Bradley, 34, was charged on Thursday with 13 misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and dissuading a witness from making a report.
In addition to jail time, Bradley could face up to $13,000 in fines and restitution if convicted.
He remained free pending a scheduled Jan. 24 arraignment.
Prosecutors contend that Bradley threatened and attacked his wife five times in 2011 and 2012. He was twice arrested at the home in 2011.
"During one incident in November 2012, Bradley allegedly pushed his wife against a kitchen wall and choked her with both hands after she requested that he stop smoking marijuana in front of their children and requested that his friends leave her San Fernando Valley home," said a statement from the city attorney's office.
Prosecutors contend that during other confrontations, Bradley kicked his wife in the ribs, approached her with a baseball bat and threatened her with a knife while telling her: "You'll be dead b---- before you divorce me."
"My client denies it," said Bradley's attorney, Harland Braun. "I've talked to him already. He said 'she's making up stories. I don't know what she's talking about.'"
The couple, who have two children, are separated and in the middle of a contentious divorce.
Bradley played 11 years with the Montreal Expos, Cleveland Indians, Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners.
His playing history was marred by several confrontational outbursts. The Dodgers traded him to Oakland in 2005 after he threw a water bottle at fans and he had a clubhouse run-in with a reporter. During his brief term with Seattle, he was suspended for a game for bumping an umpire and ejected for arguing a called third strike.
He's been a free agent since the Mariners released him in 2011.

MLB : Sammy Sosa Pinterest, Flickr Accounts Share Photos Of Former Slugger, His Wardrobe

Sammy Sosa
Sammy Sosa? Yes, he is the real Sammy Sosa, and this is, apparently, his Pinterest.
Along with Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, retired MLB slugger Sammy Sosa wasn't elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first appearance on the ballot due to the specter of performance-enhancing drugs hanging over his career. In spite of that negative news, Sosa's social media presence -- and his bright smile -- have made him an unlikely star of the week.
In the photos on the Pinterest page, Sosa can be seen in various poses around what is presumably his office. Whether sporting a suit and tie or a more casual look, the 44-year-old seems in high spirits. Each image has the same caption
"Sammy Sosa. Yes, I'm the real Sammy Sosa, and this is my Pinterest."

Ever since Jon Greenberg of ESPN Chicago tweeted a link to it on the day the 2013 BBWAA voting results were announced, the Pinterest page that has become a viral phenomenon, with Deadspin and SI.com among the websites taking note. The photos on that page come from a Flickr account belonging to SammySosaTheRealMr609. That account name is similar to the unverified Twitter account @TheRealMr609. A week before the Hall of Fame voting results were revealed, Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune reported that this Twitter account belongs to Sosa. A marketing manager for Sosa's company, Injex 21, also told RedEye that the Pinterest account does indeed belong to the longtime Cubs' slugger, too. She also confirmed that the unverified Twitter account does belong to Sosa, who hit 609 career home runs.
“We're learning social media, we’re not pros at it yet, but we’re working on it,” said Rebecca Polihronis, marketing manager for Injex 21.
The photos appearing on the Pintrest page also appear on the Flickr account but they have a slightly different caption on that site.
"Sammy Sosa. The real Sammy Sosa Baseball Hall of Fame nominee"

These photos were uploaded to Flickr on Dec. 19th, as members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America were considering Sosa and the other players on the 2013 ballot. But not even the bittersweet implications of that caption can bring down the mood of these pictures of a smiling Sammy.

NFL : Reggie Wayne's Car Stolen By A Hotel Valet

Reggie Wayne's Night Off didn't quite go as planned on Saturday, when a hotel valet allegedly stole his Bentley and took it on a drunken joyride before getting picked up by police early Sunday morning.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Wayne left his 2007 Bentley with a valet at The Westin Hotel at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. He woke up the next morning to find his keys and the car missing.
A supervisor noted that a valet, identified as Gunner Belcher, left the hotel at 9 p.m. Saturday but failed to clock out. A garage security officer told authorities he had seen a man matching Belcher's description take the Bentley from the lot late that night, WISH-TV reports.
Belcher, 21, was arrested at about 2 a.m. Sunday for driving while intoxicated. WISH-TV notes the valet failed several sobriety tests and claimed he was Wayne's "cousin by marriage." Police confirmed the car was in fact the missing Bentley, which has since been returned to the Colts star.
Many Internet users have noted the similarity between Belcher's blunder and the iconic scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, in which the group leaves a Ferrari in a garage only to have the valets take it out on a joyride around Chicago. The scene was one of many from the film recreated for a recent Honda commercial starring Matthew Broderick that aired during Super Bowl XLVI.
As Colts punter Pat McAfee pointed out, the entire incident is all the more impressive given Wayne's stellar performance on the field just a few hours later. The Indianapolis wide receiver hauled in six passes for 64 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' 27-23 win over the Titans:

Josh Brent Had To Be 'Commanded' To Help Jerry Brown From Wreck

Josh Brent
Tire skid marks are seen leaving the road as news cameraman film the area where a single vehicle accident involving Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent occurred Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, in Irving, Texas.
A witness to the immediate aftermath of the one-car crash that claimed the life of Dallas Cowboys practice-squad player Jerry Brown has come forward with a startling account of the incident. Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent, who has been charged with intoxication manslaughter for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, had to be coerced into helping Brown from the burning wreckage, according to Stacee McWilliams, who spoke with The Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV News 8 in Dallas.
Brent was speeding in a Dallas suburb when he flipped his car in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to police. Irving police spokesman John Argumaniz said Brown was found unresponsive at the scene. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
McWilliams explained to local media outlets what she saw when arriving at the site of the crash before police. She said she encountered Brent near the wreckage. As a fire in the car began to intensify, she realized that Brown was still in the car. As described by McWilliams, she had to plead with Brent to help Brown out of the car.
"I said 'Get him out of the car,'" McWilliams told News 8. "'You can't just stand here and watch this man die. Pull him out of the car!' And he said to me, 'He won't get out.' I said, 'Get him out of the' -- you know, commanded him -- 'get him out of the car!'"

Although McWilliams acknowledged that Brent eventually did pull Brown from the burning wreck, as had been previously reported, she felt that earlier accounts of the incident overstated his willingness to assist.
“I want people to understand that Josh Brent is not a hero,” McWilliams told The Dallas Morning News. “I keep hearing reports of how he was there to pull his friend from the fire but he had to be coerced and pushed and begged and pleaded to get his friend out of the fire and when he pulled him out, he just left him in the street. He didn’t tell him ‘hang in there, help is on the way.’ Nothing. He just left him there and I want the magnitude of that to be understood.”

According to a police affidavit obtained by USA Today, Brent was observed pulling Green from the burning vehicle. However, Brent's attorney reportedly said that the other details shared with him by police do not match up with McWilliams' account.
“That is absolutely false,” Brent's attorney, George Milner told the Dallas Morning News after hearing McWilliams' version of events. “What I’ve been told is that Jerry Brown was never conscious after the accident.”
Despite McWilliams' chilling account of Brent's reluctance to help Brown from the car, he described Brown as being his "very best friend." The two football players attended the University of Illinois and played on the football team together.
"Jerry Brown was my very best friend, and I'm just trying to deal with his death right now," Brent said, via The Sporing News, after being released on on $500,000 bond on Sunday.
Police reached out to McWilliams after she shared her account with the media, according to News 8.

Caroline Wozniacki Mimics Serena Williams, Stuffs Her Bra And Skirt During Exhibition Match

It's that time of year again: December, which means it's time for another installment of Caroline Wozniacki imitating Serena Williams.
In an exhibition match against Sharapova this past weekend, the Danish tennis star stuffed her bra and skirt with towels to mimic the famously voluptuous Williams. The stunt elicited laughter and cat calls from a crowd that included tennis player Roger Federer as an amused spectator.
As Larry Brown Sports points out, this is the second time in as many years that Woz has busted out her Serena impression. In December 2011, she stuffed her clothes while dancing on the court to a Rihanna song.
Williams often finds herself at the butt of jokes by fellow tennis players. In November, both Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick enhanced their assets with towels to impersonate the 2012 WTA Player of the Year.
The imitations may elicit a few laughs from onlookers, but they also give way to negative remarks from critics who find the impressions to be in poor taste.
"If you're going to be Serena, hit your return with ferocity and glare at a linesperson," USA Today's Chris Chase wrote about Wozniacki's most recent imitation.
Similarly, in 2011, the Examiner's Lena Adebowale wrote:
If Wozniacki wants to imitate Williams, she should consider copying Williams' serve. Or better yet, her ability to win Grand Slams in the clutch. Williams is an international tennis champion. Mimicking her walk or buxom feminine attributes rather than her innate skill is tacky and disrespectful.

Hector 'Macho' Camacho, Ex-Boxing Champ, Dies At 50 After Being Taken Off Life Support

Shot while sitting in a parked car outside a bar Tuesday with a friend in the city of Bayamon, he was declared dead at the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan. The friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, died at the scene of the shooting. Police said Mojica had nine small bags of cocaine in his pocket and a 10th bag was found open in the car.
Originally from Bayamon, just outside San Juan, Camacho was long regarded as a flashy if volatile talent, a skilled boxer who was perhaps overshadowed by his longtime foil, Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez, who would beat him in a long-awaited showdown in Las Vegas in 1992.
Camacho fought professionally for three decades, from his humble debut against David Brown at New York's Felt Forum in 1980 to an equally forgettable swansong against Sal Duran in Kissimmee, Florida, in 2010.
In between, he fought some of the biggest stars spanning two eras, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran.
"This is something I've done all my life, you know?" Camacho told The Associated Press after a workout in 2010. "A couple years back, when I was doing it, I was still enjoying it. The competition, to see myself perform. I know I'm at the age that some people can't do this no more."
Camacho's family moved to New York when he was young and he grew up in Spanish Harlem, which at the time was rife with crime. Camacho landed in jail as a teenager before turning to boxing, which for many kids in his neighborhood provided an outlet for their aggression.
Former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a friend since childhood, described Camacho as "like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," but otherwise combined a friendly nature with a powerful jab.
"He's a good human being, a good hearted person," Laporte said as he waited with other friends and members of the boxer's family outside the hospital in San Juan after the shooting. "A lot of people think of him as a cocky person but that was his motto ... inside he was just a kid looking for something."
Laporte lamented that Camacho never found a mentor outside the boxing ring.
"The people around him didn't have the guts or strength to lead him in the right direction," Laporte said. "There was no one strong enough to put a hand on his shoulder and tell him how to do it."
Drug, alcohol and other problems trailed Camacho after the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.
A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.
Camacho's former wife, Amy, obtained a restraining order against him in 1998, alleging he threatened her and one of their children. The couple, who had two children at the time, later divorced.
He divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida in recent years, appearing on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube.
Inside the boxing ring, Camacho flourished. He won three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur, and after turning pro, he quickly became a contender with an all-action style reminiscent of other Puerto Rican fighters.
Long promoted by Don King, Camacho won his first world title by beating Rafael Limon in a super-featherweight bout in Puerto Rico on Aug. 7, 1983. He moved up in weight two years later to capture a lightweight title by defeating Jose Luis Ramirez, and successfully defended the belt against fellow countryman Edwin Rosario.
The Rosario fight, in which the victorious Camacho still took a savage beating, persuaded him to scale back his ultra-aggressive style in favor of a more cerebral, defensive approach.
The change in style was a big reason that Camacho, at the time 38-0, lost a close split decision to Greg Haugen at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in 1991.
Camacho won the rematch to set up his signature fight against Chavez, this time at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Camacho was roundly criticized for his lack of action, and the Mexican champion won a lopsided unanimous decision to retain the lightweight title.
It was at that point that Camacho became the name opponent for other rising contenders, rather than the headliner fighting for his own glory.
He lost a unanimous decision to another young Puerto Rican fighter, Trinidad, and was soundly defeated by De La Hoya. In 1997, Camacho ended Leonard's final comeback with a fifth-round knockout. It was Camacho's last big victory even though he boxed for another decade.
"Hector was a fighter who brought a lot of excitement to boxing," said Ed Brophy, executive director of International the Boxing Hall of Fame. "He was a good champion. Roberto Duran is kind of in a class of his own, but Hector surely was an exciting fighter that gave his all to the sport."
The fighter's last title bout came in 1997 against welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya, who won by unanimous decision. Camacho's last fight was his defeat by Duran in May 2010. He had a career record of 79-6-3.
