EDM News : Electric Zoo NYC adds ‘Phase 3’ names to 2013 line-up

To celebrate its fifth anniversary of lighting up New York, Electric Zoo Festival has up-sized with its 2013 line-up. This year there’ll be a Main Stage West and a Main Stage East, sharing the headliners across the festival’s three day run: August 30, 31 and September 1.
After a couple of line-up announcements, the festival has now added its ‘Phase 3’ additions, including a host of underground talent on Made Event’s renowned Sunday School Grove stage. Distinguished acts like Four Tet, Joy Orbison, Joris Voorn and Joel Mull have joined the party, while the Boys Noize Records and OWSLA stage has Skream, Alvin Risk, Birdy Nam Nam and more signing on. In 2013, the previously-announced headliners are back on the East and West stages – Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, David Guetta, Above & Beyond and Bassnectar to name a few. Sebastian Ingrosso is also locked as one of the marquee acts, and bass fiends with get their mainstage fix thanks to Excision, Flux Pavilion, Knife Party, Krewella and more.
Then there’s Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Madeon, Zedd, Laidback Luke and other festival pros keeping the weekend rolling. As Electric Zoo’s founders put it: “Every year we have been committed to improving the Electric Zoo experience for all of our fans. This year we decided to celebrate our fifth year anniversary by going bigger and adding a second main stage with 30 more acts to celebrate our collective passion for dance music.”
This year, Electric Zoo will have an 18-and-over policy, following “fans’ requests for this change”. Check out the full day-by-day line-ups below.

EDM News : Martin Solveig defends his DJ choices: “It's about context"

A couple of weekends back, U.S. big-roomer Wolfgang Gartner let fly with a flood of Tweets lamenting “high profile DJs” who stack their sets with the biggest, most obvious tracks of the moment. As he bluntly put it: “Fucking DIG, lazy ass fucks”. What set him off? Apparently watching Martin Solveig play a “straight-up Beatport Top 10 hits marathon” at the Neon Desert Music Festival in El Paso, Texas.
After the rant was over and Gartner had bowed out of Twitter, Solveig level-headedly replied, “I’m a crowd-pleaser and leave experimentation to real underground acts.” The ‘Beatport Top Ten’ debate is nothing new, but it’s still one that stirs up DJs and punters alike. In a recent interview with Billboard, Solveig was given more than 140 characters to present his perspective on the unexpected fracas.
“It’s very important to any EDM DJ to be creative, to even when you play big songs to play them in a way that is unique, and this is what I do,” Solveig told Billboard. “Anyone who knows me knows this is what I do, so I don’t need to justify anything.”
“It’s always a question of balance,” he went on. “It’s also a question of context. This is very important. I was at that time, when I got called out by this gentleman, the headliner of a festival, the biggest name on the bill, one of the only so-called ‘EDM artists’ of the whole festival. There were some indie bands, some indie DJs, but I was one of the biggest names – with Wolfgang – of this show. So my response was to end and close the show bringing the crowd what they came for and what they paid their ticket for.
“And then of course when I’m just a part of an Ultra or of an EDC in Vegas and there are the 50 biggest DJs on the planet all together, then of course I don’t need to play some of the records that I play. This is the beauty of being not only a producer and a record-maker, but to be a DJ and to be able to adapt to any situation.
“Finally, it was a two-hour set which is pretty long on a festival level when you want to keep the people really up high, which is also my mission. So yeah, on that specific show I played probably 60 or 70 records and half of them are super famous, super big, and the other half are more my personal stuff. This is how I do things – like everyone else, actually.”

Martin Solveig to put EDM at forefront of MTV Movie Awards with Sunday performance

After electronic artists blew away the traditional nature of the Grammy Awards, MTV looks to take a page from that book to put EDM at the center of Sunday’s movie awards. The mega-network has enlisted Martin Solveig as the event’s DJ and he will be spinning mash-ups of movie scores from “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” “Pulp Fiction,” and more throughout the show. This news comes around the same time that Solveig has revealed his live orchestral version of “The Night Out,” a creative move that proves his artistry perfect for MTV’s major spotlight.
Sunday night’s show will further pound EDM into the mainstream as publics continue to take on the genres explosion.”Having a house DJ … will add an exciting new layer to the show and is a continuation of our full embrace of the EDM movement,” said Amy Doyle, head of music and talent strategy at MTV.
