Video : Kaskade Gives Back To His Fans With A Live Set From The Atmosphere Tour in Los Angeles

Kaskade has always been one to give back to his fans. Today as a thank you for an insane Atmosphere Tour he’s giving his fans a live set and video from his show in Los Angeles. Kaskade will release the video from the show in 6 parts over the next few weeks. Here’s what he had to say on his “audio and visual souvenir” from the Atmosphere Tour:
“We are the Twitter-trained, status-update ready, Instagram cosmopolite. If you are anything like me, I’m guessing you can listen to music for hours, but not have the same stamina for watching a screen. I get it. So I’ve adapted how I want to present my audio and visual souvenir of our time together in the Atmosphere.
Today on Soundcloud I’m releasing my live set from the Atmosphere show in Los Angeles on October 19, 2013 at The Shrine. It is uncut and unedited. From start to finish you can hear what went down, including those moments when my audience’s collective voice rivals the massive sound system.
I like it loud. I like you loud.”

Top 10 DJs Over 40: Veterans In an Industry Dominated by Youth

top_5_djs_over_50
10 DJs Over 40 Still Going Strong
I don’t know about you guys, but I like to think I’ll still be every bit of the EDM fanatic I am right now when I turn 40. But, the reality is, that’s not how it works for most people. It’s a scene where the landscape is constantly changing. The DJs I grew up listening to have opened the door to the younger generation. The Beatport top 100 is filled with names that are too young to even legally get into the clubs that they headline at. Although these young and talented artists deserve every bit of the recognition they receive, I think it’s important that we pay homage to some of the DJs that have been anchors in the scene. Despite ups and downs in the industry, extreme shifts in audience musical taste, and the stigma that EDM is for young people, these 10 DJs over 40 have stuck around and are still absolutely killing it.

10. Paul Oakenfold (50 years old) - It’s not even fair to try and sum up Paul’s accomplishments in a few short sentences. He is truly a legend, and we here in the United States, have had the pleasure of seeing a lot more of his face in the last 5 years. Paul is still a resident and one of the most in demand DJs in both Las Vegas and Miami. During his career, Paul has played shows in Alaska, Vietnam, Cuba, India, Brazil, Uruguay, South Korea, China, the Philippines, South Africa, and Egypt.
9. Benny Benassi (46 years old) - I doubt when Benassi released “Satisfaction” in June of 2002 that he thought it would still be a staple of so many big name artist’s sets 11 years later. “Satisfaction” is only one small piece of Benassi’s incredible DJ career. His song “Cinema” was one of the genre’s anthems in 2011. In addition to his insanely successful single releases, Benassi still maintains the role of a headliner at some of the world’s biggest music festivals.
8. Fatboy Slim (50 years old) - If you’ve been to a festival this year, you’ve probably watched Fatboy Slim play a main stage set. “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” has become somewhat of an anthem for the EDM community. But, it’s “Praise You” that will forever be Fatboy Slim’s anthem in my mind. Released in 1996, it is a track that will always be remembered, along with his other generation-defining hits such as “Right Here Right Now” and “Weapon of Choice”. Scattered over a period of about 20 years, Fatboy Slim has raked in 10 MTV Video Music Awards.
7. Frankie Knuckles (58 years old) - I’m sorry if you’re too young to know who Frankie is, but it would simply be wrong not to include this guy on the list. After a rough childhood in poverty stricken Harlem, he played perhaps the most vital role in the emergence and popularization of house music. His work in Chicago in the late 1980s and early 1990s helped birth a scene that did not exist in any way before him. Simply put, EDM as we know it today would not exist without Frankie Knuckles. At 58 years old, he’s still as active as ever. He came back to his stomping grounds earlier this summer and let loose an incredible set at Wavefront Music Festival in Chicago.
6. David Guetta (45 years old) - After getting his start in the 1980′s, David Guetta has managed to rack up an unfathomable amount of accomplishments in recent years. Six million album sales, 3 UK #1 songs in a single year (2009), and 15 million single sales. When you’re headlining the main stage at Ultra, there’s little doubt about your place in the industry.
 5. Carl Cox (52 years old) – Everyone had to know this name was going to be present somewhere on the list. Carl Cox is one of the most beloved and talented DJs in the industry. You’d be hard pressed to find a single person that has a negative thing to say about him. Depending on who you talk to, an argument can definitely be made that he hosts the most impressive stage at Ultra Music Festival. The Carl Cox & Friends stage is a visual and musical masterpiece. Cox is perhaps the most well known face in the dance music capital of Ibiza as well.
4. Paul Van Dyk (41 years old) - When it comes to massive and long lasting success, no one holds a candle to Paul Van Dyk. Van Dyk has managed to hold a spot as a top 10 DJ in the world for every year since 1998. He is one of the first DJs ever to use his musical gifts to vault himself to celebrity status. The German producer helped bring the genre into the public eye. Oh, and add a Grammy to his list of accomplishments as well.
3. Pete Tong (52 years old) - It’s all gone Pete Tong. Pete Tong is electronic music. He’s dabbled with just about every aspect of the industry. In addition to being a musical genius, Tong is a brilliant businessman. He’s responsible for starting the International Music Summit. He’s also helped launch the careers of so many of the artists we love today with his world famous BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and The Essential Selection. I feel our industry is safe so long as we have a man of Tong’s caliber protecting it. He’s no slouch on the stage either. There’s a reason artists pull out their best work when they are in his presence. Tong will be joining Tiesto and Calvin Harris on tour this December.
2. Kaskade (42 years old) - Having been entrenched in the scene for over ten years, Kaskade seems to pick up more and more steam each year he ages. It was just last year that Pioneer and DJ Times ranked him as the number one DJ. His upcoming Atmosphere tour remains one of the most highly anticipated tours in recent memory.
1. Tiesto (44 years old) - Named the number one DJ in the world three consecutive years starting in 2002, Tiesto is showing no signs of slowing down now ten years later. He remains arguably the most recognized name in the industry. Whether it be trance Tiesto, house Tiesto, or even deep house Tiesto, it’s going to cost about half a million dollars to book the Dutch superstar.

DJS : Roger Sanchez: Back to his Underground Roots

The house heavyweight talks about his affinity for the island, James Blake and letting out his inner freak.

On Monday 1st July, Cafe Ole returned for yet another season at Space, of course bringing with it one of the biggest and most talented names in house music, Roger Sanchez. So all pervading is his influence that even non-house heads will have many of his songs, including the huge 2001 number-one hit ‘Another Chance’, as part of their musical landscape.
Ibiza’s music scene is seemingly in a state of flux. Clubbers and industry buffs alike are excitingly questioning new residencies while DJ’s and venues (quite literally) play a big game of musical chairs. There is no better time then, to interview this ‘DJ’s DJ’, Grammy Award-winner, producer and radio show host. Being so established in the industry and having seen so many summers and musical shifts, his opinion will be a very credible one. However, more to the point, in this ‘Year of Change’ he is paradoxically revisiting his original underground sound with his new work.
Roger has just released his new track ‘Troubleman’ with G.T.O on May 20th. As the first track of his forthcoming album fittingly titled ‘Roots’, it is intriguing to see him retracing his footsteps back to a sound more reminiscent of an Old School Sanchez.
With this being his thirteenth summer on the island, he seems to be as essential to the Balearics as a good mojito. I chatted to him just after he touched down on Spanish soil for the opening of Cafe Ole. Even after a long haul flight from L.A he still had a lot to say, seeming just as excited to be back as he would have been years ago:
Welcome back to the island Roger!  You’re here for a third residency at Cafe Ole at Space every Monday. You’ve had residencies for 13 years on the island and you’re now a permanent fixture here every summer. Do you remember when you fell in love with Ibiza?
"I think 1995 was the first year that I really started having that affinity for Ibiza and since then I’ve been back here every year. It was the first year that I played at Ku which is now Privilege and Pacha, and I just really got a sense of the island. There weren’t as many big nights then but it was really the spirit of the island that you can’t find anywhere else that really captivated me."
A lot of people are calling 2013 the ‘Year Of Change’ for Ibiza’s music scene. Do you think this is the case?
"It’s definitely the year of change! There’s a lot of different movement, with new venues opening up, new DJs on the island, and some that aren’t on the island that usually are. It’s really different; a lot of people are starting their own things and shaking things up. It’s good to shake things up!"
For you it all began in New York. Tell me what you love about the house music scene there. What about Ibiza in comparison, how do you find the crowd changes?
"It’s interesting because I think now they’re closer to each other than before. New York used to be a more underground scene, dance music wasn’t as big at that point as it is now and I think the Ibiza crowd was a lot more knowledgeable about music then. But they’re actually a lot closer now than they used to be. I love it."
The new theme for Cafe Ole 2013 is Café Olé Freak, featuring ‘an array of grotesque and surreal characters that invite all who attend to immerse themselves within a utopian dream world.’ Why was this theme chosen? Do you have an inner freak that you like to let loose?
"What it resonates with me is when you allow the music to really take control. In the last couple of years I’ve really gone back to my underground house roots, and that’s my inner freak I’m letting out; the underground is stronger than ever."
Your sound has developed a lot. What inspires you musically?
"For me it’s interesting because each track has a different source of inspiration. I may have listened to a record that inspires me or it could be my surroundings, or buildings, like architecture (he was originally going to be an architect before he chose to focus on music). I try to draw on life in general I think."
You’ve collaborated with a huge number of artists over the years. Are there any artists that you’d specifically like to work with in the future?
"There’s a lot of new up and coming artists that I like, like James Blake, his work is very haunting. Artists like him are very unique and I’m always looking out for them."
Any dates in particular we should put in our diaries this summer? You’re playing all night long on the 28th July aren’t you?
"Yep, that’s definitely going to be a fun one, I get to play from start to finish. Then I’m doing some great back to back sets with people like Frankie Knuckles. It’s going to be a lot of fun this summer; I’m looking forward to it."

Funny Or Die troll the DJ Mag Top 100 in cameo-filled video

Image for Watch: Funny Or Die troll the DJ Mag Top 100 in cameo-filled video
By now, you would’ve noticed that the polls are open in this year’s DJ Mag Top 100. Nicky Romero’s angling for votes, Gareth Emery and TyDi have both publically opted out, and comedy website Funny or Die is hard at work taking the piss. This year, the site has recruited an A-list cast of dance music names to spoof the poll in their DJ Mag “campaign” video – and while the annual Top 100 might be an easy target, the parody’s nonetheless amusing.
A cast of big names cameo, all making a tongue-in-cheek case for why they deserve your vote. Boys Noize is there promising to bring more techno to schools, while Afrojack wants to save the environment. Leave it to Dillon Francis to weave burritos into his spiel (“Which candidate loves burritos?” he asks. “Which candidate has never wavered on his position that tacos are kind of bullshit?”) while HARD Events head Gary Richards, better known as Destructo, promises he’s got a new festival in the works: “Coming in 2015, our all trap submarine: Real Trap Ship”.
Even 90s legend Alanis Morissette makes an appearance. “I’m not really even a DJ yet,” she laughs, stationed behind behind a laptop and mixer, “but I’m sure I could learn to do it in, what, like, two minutes? How hard could it be?” But the best line in the whole thing comes from to veteran Brit Paul Oakenfold: “Vote for us, so we don’t have to get kids in India to do it for you.” Boom tish.

DJS : Calvin Harris aces Forbes rich list

Image for The $46 million man: Calvin Harris aces Forbes rich list
Forbes, the magazine committed to telling us all who’s earning what, has this week released its round-up of the richest ‘celebrities’ under 30. In the number four spot is none other than mainstage mega-star and soon-to-be return Stereosonic headliner Calvin Harris, with Forbes estimating his worth at a cool $46 million. The only names ahead of him? Pop giants Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.
The ascent of Harris from the uncertain frontman who worried about his singing voice to the don of hit records has been compelling to watch. While the producer’s first two albums I Created Disco and Ready For The Weekend were stacked with pop-friendly hooks, 2010 was a defining moment. “From now on forever I’ll be in DJ mode,” he vowed that year. “I’ve stopped the live shows.” He’s kept that promise, while also lending his Midas touch as a studio gun-for-hire.
“In February, he signed on to play more than 70 shows over a two-year period in Las Vegas,” Forbes writes, referencing the DJ’s lucrative deal with MGM Grand’s Hakkasan and the Wet Republic pool. “While the majority of his money comes from performing, he also earns from writing and producing songs like Rihanna’s Grammy-winning We Found Love. Harris played more than 150 shows in the 12 months since June 1, 2012.”
Calvin’s third album 18 Months has clocked up no fewer than eight Top 5 successes, a record in British chart history. After winning the mantle of Songwriter of the Year at the UK’s annual Ivor Novello awards, the Scotsman mused that he’s not limiting himself to commercial hit-making. “I’m doing more dance music that probably won’t get into the charts,” he told Music Week after the big win. “I just want to make good music; this award is like drawing a line under the past two years where I’ve just been intensely fucking working to try and make singles and hit records.”
It was Ellie Goulding hook-up I Need Your Love that took him to the record eight chart-topping singles, a procession of #1s from 18 Months that started with Bounce all the way back in June 2011.

DJS : Check out Legendary Producer, Giorgio Moroder's first-ever DJ set

The 2013 Red Bull Music Academy is currently stationed in New York, with workshops, panels and of course parties taking over the sleepless city. On Monday night, at Output in Brooklyn , dancers were treated to a very special session of Francois K’s long-running Deep Space.
Image for Listen: Giorgio Moroder's first-ever DJ set

As well as a set from the host, there was Giorgio Moroder, playing what was billed as his first-ever DJ appearance. The legendary producer rolled out some of his finest moments including Donna Summer’s I Feel Love, Bad Girls, One The Radio and his recent entry on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, Giorgio By Moroder. It was recorded for RBMA Radio so you can listen below.
Even better, the New York gig wasn’t a one-off. “I am becoming a DJ…and I don’t know why, really,” Moroder cheerfully told Time Out New York recently, adding that he’s got an agent for DJing and a set booked in Japan. He’s also been working with Avicii, just like fellow Random Access Memories collaborator Nile Rodgers.
“I feel like DJs aren’t just the new stars; the really good ones are so powerful,” Moroder added to Time Out. “I was in Ibiza last summer, and it was incredible. It’s like a conductor, telling the musicians, ‘Go slow now. Go loud now.’ DJs are doing the same thing. I’m not there yet, but I hope it will happen.”

EDM News : BT's Cautionary Tale: Mentoring Porter Robinson

Many young producers looking for (or who might have) an older mentor also in the production game, so when producer BT went on a long tiarade about his experience mentoring and helping Porter Robinson in his rise to popularity this morning, it seemed poignant. It’s a very interesting read and cautionary tale on how quickly relationships can disappear when fame and success come into play.
As is often easiest with a large volume of tweets, we’ve compiled them into a Storify story, below:

BT rants on Twitter about how his mentoring of Porter Robinson went south after Porter went big - and why it sucks to be the mentor left in the dark.
  1. Today I'm going to tell a long story. Prepare for about 100 tweets (no but seriously) @porterrobinson you should begin reading at this one
  2. So about 3 years ago my then agent asked me to check out a MySpace. It's was @porterrobinson. I listened & was blown away. Actually inspired
  3. I asked around to my peers & friends @tiesto @arminvanbuuren @djadamk (and more) Guys, have you heard Porter Robinson? None of them had.
  4. So I contacted @porterrobinson & we began to strike up a friendship. Talked on the phone, talked to his parents, talked CSound, whatever.
  5. Told everyone I knew about him. Started playing his music constantly on #LaptopSymphony. Told @siriusXM about him. Anyone that would listen.
  6. And we began to plan to work on some music together. Notably Must Be the Love and Letting Go from my new album. As all of this was unfolding
  7. People began to take notice of Porter. He got his first big remix for Lady Gaga and then @tiesto (finally listened) and took him on tour.
  8. I was elated. This felt like a personal victory. I'd invested a tremendous amount of my social commodity into someone young and truly gifted
  9. Before long Porter was more reclusive, harder to reach, surrounded by a team of advisers. It was just beginning to blow up for him.
  10. Not only was I understanding of this (because I've walked it) but also excited for him. Anyway, quickly Porter seemed too cool to interact
  11. The music we'd began Porter claimed he couldn't finish because he didn't have time or couldn't get anything good going amongst other things
  12. And this put a really bad taste in my mouth and I was personally affronted by this. It honestly hurt my feelings a considerable amount.
  13. I've noted similar behavior in other young producers & it made me feel like the generation of guys coming up now are self focused & selfish
  14. Here's the thing. When I was coming up someone helped me a similar way @sashaofficial. He gave me an opportunity that can never be replayed
  15. And I vowed to do the same thing someday when I could and I have done it repeatedly. It feels great to pay it forward and most importantly
  16. To remember that whatever you do, there has always been help to achieve it that deserves acknowledgement. That & especially in dance music
  17. (and listen up young producers) So much has come before you to make what you do possible. It deserves your acknowledgement and respect
  18. I gave mine in my times of comeuppance and so should you all that walk that path.
  19. So for my part, the sh**tty email I wrote you when you let me down (for all the aforementioned reasons) I'm sorry for.
  20. Your a real talent @porterrobinson and I did then and do now want your music to be heard by everyone that will listen. It's awesome.
  21. So I hope you (and other young producers reading this) take this as a cautionary tale. Remember to act with respect and pay it forward.
  22. Even Tiesto chimed in to note his own observation of the same phenomenon:
  23. @BT you are so right...there's not much loyalty out there!

EDM News : Ultra Music Festival Phase 2: Skrillex, Azelia Banks, Sleigh Bells

Skrillex performs during day 3 of the Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival on June 9, 2012 in Manchester, Tennessee.

Downtown Miami's Bayfront Park will play host to Ultra over the weekends of March 15-17 and March 22-24. It's the first year of the expanded festival, now in its 15th year.

New additions to the Ultra lineup include Paul Van Dyk, The Weeknd, Pretty Lights, Steve Aoki, Porter Robinson, Madeon and Dog Blood, the side project of Skrillex and Boys Noize.

They join previously announced acts deadmau5, Tiësto, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, Above & Beyond, Afrojack, Bassnectar, Calvin Harris, Fatboy Slim and Kaskade. There will also be live sets by Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, Hot Chip, Matt & Kim and Yeasayer.

One of the centerpieces of this year's fest will be main stage sets by Swedish House Mafia, who have chosen Ultra as the final show of their "One Last Tour." They'll play on the first night of the 2-weekend event as well as the final night.

Last year's festival featured headliner performances from EDM heavyweights David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Kaskade, but the biggest moment came courtesy of Madonna, who made a surprise appearance with then-newcomer Avicii.

EDM : Southern Migration BPM Festival Playa Del Carmen, Mexico January 4th – 13th

PM Festival beach party in full flow, Mexico

NOW we are done with NYE and the hangovers are dying off and the blues are descending for most of us as we get back to work and head into 2013 there is a DJ migration taking place as The World’s elite head south for the BPM festival in Mexico.

The festival will be hosting multiple day parties at at Kool Beach Club, Mamita's Beach Club and Canibal Royal Beach Club all located along the Caribbean sea with its turquoise waters and miles of vanilla sand.
At night, the quiet town of Playa Del Carmen turns it up at Blue Parrot Night Club, Coco Maya Night Club, La Santanera, Alux Cave, Blue Venado, and Marlins After Hours with dancing past sunrise.
The line up is frankly one of the comprehensive put together and highlights why it is regarded as one of the finest (if not the finest) electronic music festivals in The World.
It also illustrates how underground electronic music is conquering the globe continent by continent.
"One New Year's resolution you should make is to attend BPM Festival, returning on 4th January to the gloriously tropical climes of Mexico's stunning coastline region, Playa Del Carmen, for its sixth edition... Originally conceived as the industry's chance to escape the grind of constant travelling and endless late nights, by offering a series of beachside parties in paradise with plenty of downtime, its evolved into a fully-fledged festival bearing possibly the longest line-up of underground dance talent we've ever laid eyes on each year. It's only getting bigger, too."

Not to be missed parties include the legendary Masters At Work team of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, two house maestros guest starring at the Rebel Rave.
One of BPM's daytime beach staples is Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream, a much-anticipated party with a dreamy soundtrack tailor-made for blue skies, sunny smiles, and dancing with sand between your toes.
Perennial faves Art Department return stronger than ever for their No. 19 Music showcase as one of the pillars of BPM.
Jamie Jones' Hot Creations presents Paradise is destined to become a nu-disco favorite.
Debut parties with techno legends Carl Cox and Sven Väth brings along his Cocoon Heroes.
Richie Hawtin returns with the Minus crew and unleashes the power of today's technology.
Dubfire returns once again with his surefire hit SCI+TEC party, along with Carlo Lio.
Cadenza head honcho Luciano brings along his merry band.
Guy Gerber brings back his live show for a genuinely unique performance.
Marco Carola will bring Music On all night long for a special extended set.
Innervisions' veterans Dixon & Henrik Schwarz bring their intimable blend of deep house.
Disco don DJ Harvey is sure to mesmerize the uninitiated with his penchant for disco classics, obscure beauties and impeccable mixing style.
After all that, be sure to maintain your party pacing and save your energy for the The BPM closing party with Danny Tenaglia and special guests for a grand finale finish.
We caught up with a number of artists appearing during the festival and asked them why BPM has become so special ...
"The pace of BPM is so different from other electronic dance music festivals. It's purely about the music - substance over style." DUBFIRE
"Last year was my first experience at BPM and I was blown away by the whole event. Amazing party and the crowd was so up for it, with a great mixture of people from all nationalities. What could be better than a 10 day party with some of the best DJs in the world in a beautiful sunny location." JOHN DIGWEED
"For me it's one of the highlights of the year. It reminds me of how WMC was all those years back. People are all there for the music, and you get that feeling when you're there." NIC FANCIULLI

"We're returning to BPM for their legendary beach parties and intimate chill vibes with all our friends from around the world." SOUL CLAP
“I look forward to being with all my friends [at The BPM Festival]. It's a pretty big window in the festival season in the winter and BPM is a good chance to see your mates and people you met touring and for everyone to be in the same place like Miami and Detroit.” LEE FOSS
“BPM is about catching up with some friends, eating octopus, swimming in cenotes and cold lampin in the sun.”DROOG (LA Culprit Trio: Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe)
“I can't wait to see how it feels being close to the beach to play and party. Also many friends are there, so it will be lots of fun. We rented a big house with few friends and after the festival I will make some holidays for 2 weeks. Only 2 weeks this year, because i wanna go back to berlin to make music. It will be a bit cold and grey in Berlin, but winter time is very good for creativity and i am missing making music.” ELLEN ALLIEN
“We're reuniting the Superfreqs in Mexico and If you're looking for amazing music, a futuristic experience, soulful attitude, class, sexiness, madness, style, innovation, love, passion, honesty, integrity & most of all fun all rolled into one beautiful event, then this will be by far the best party that BPM have put together for this forthcoming festival. I'm so excited I could explode!” MR. C (formerly of the SHAMEN and The End)
"BPM is the best electronic dance music festival in the world right now." ART DEPARTMENT
