Electronic dance music superstar Deadmau5 graces the cover of Rolling Stone's Summer Special issue, on newsstands this Friday, June 22nd. The cover story follows the producer-DJ born Joel Zimmerman as he travels by chartered jet from London to festivals in Norway and Sweden. Always outspoken, Zimmerman offers some brutally frank opinions about his EDM peers, Madonna and more.
• Zimmerman slams EDM stars who show up to a live gig and press play. "David Guetta has two iPods and a mixer and he just plays tracks – like, 'Here's one with Akon, check it out!'," he says. "Even Skrillex [a friend of Zimmerman’s] isn't doing anything too technical. He has a laptop and a MIDI recorder, and he's just playing his shit ... People are, thank God, smartening up about who does what – but there’s still button-pushers getting paid half a million. And not to say I’m not a button-pusher. I’m just pushing a lot more buttons.”
• He's still angry at Madonna for her appearance at the Ultra Music Festival in March, where she asked the audience, "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” – a barely coded reference to Ecstasy. "You want to be 'hip' and 'cool' and 'funky grandma'?," says Zimmerman. "Fine. It's not my place to say you're irrelevant. If you're gonna come into my world, at least do it with a little more dignity. I understand she has millions more fans, and is way more successful than I'll ever be. But it's like talking about slavery at a fucking blues concert. It's inappropriate."
• Zimmerman routinely refuses to contribute to pop records, and he dismisses most dance music as formulaic – "Just 120 bpm with a fucking kick drum on every quarter note" – but he's been trying to get Dave Grohl to remix one of his own songs. "Because fuck dance music, you know?"

DJ SNEAK: "THESE DJS ARE VANDALIZING AND BASTARDIZING HOUSE MUSIC"

Remember when Sneak called Swedish House Mafia "DJ actors"? A couple of months on, and he's gone a bit further. In a recent interview, DJ Sneak has said the DJ trio are "manufactured like Coca-Cola" and are "vandalising and bastardising" house music.
He said: "While I do this for love and homage to the music and DJing craft, they constantly figure out ways to make it the most commercial noise they can make. Their main focus for creating is to make some hit, it is not about creating something original and soulful, it’s about following the calculated steps to come up with a hit for the purpose of their own success.
"They measure success by spending ridiculous amounts of money paying their way to the top. But they are not the first ones. Tiesto was a master at creating the super DJ brand, with big budget marketing, financial support, and a well managed team. So called DJ/ producers like Avicci, David Guetta, Afrojack must all be down with the same fabricated manufactured DJ superstar manual because they are all doing it the same way, often supporting each other to become bigger better brands.
"They are clearly manufactured like Coca-Cola.
"Listen to the classics, look back at the history. If you’re going to start making or playing house music, educate yourself and second respect the sound. They need to take a good look at themselves and realise that they are the worst thing that has ever happened to this music industry.
"We built this house a long time ago, these newcomers just like to vandalize it by bastardizing the music to become some kiddie pop genre."

Ingrosso : The Swedish House Mafia Aren't Faking

You’d think that by now, people would be used to Deadmau5 mouthing off. But when Rolling Stone published an excerpt of the mau5’s latest caustic vent about “button-pushing DJs” yesterday, one Sebastian Ingrosso took the bait.
Deadmau5’s latest rant may not have mentioned Swedish House Mafia by name, but Ingrosso sure took offense. “That’s interesting that [Deadmau5] said that, because that’s exactly what he does,” the SHM heavyweight’s quipped to Rolling Stone yesterday. “But we don’t. We have four CD players, six hands, so we’re going in and out all the time, otherwise we would be bored and take our fuckin’ lives. He’s a great guy and an awesome producer. But, buddy, if you want to start talking about people pushing buttons – just pushing ‘play’ – then that would be another thing.”
Of course, the whole ‘fake DJ’ thing is a bit of a touchy subject for the Swedes. At the Las Vegas conference EDMbiz earlier this month, Steve Angello hit back at suggestions that he’s partial to hitting play on a pre-recorded mix. “The thing is, I lost my hearing in my left ear two years ago…so I taught myself how to DJ without headphones.” Angello defended. “Listen, I wouldn’t be doing this if I was faking, cause I could’ve done shitloads of other stuff. I’ve done this since I was twelve, I know how to beatmatch.”
After getting the Deadmau5 stuff off his chest, Ingrosso went on to compare SHM – or their chord progressions, at least – to none other than The Beatles. “I think the Beatles made something that’s kind of melancholic to sad and happy combined, and that’s just amazing,” he explained. “I kind of analyze music a lot, and I think that what the Beatles have done is what we do today. [It] doesn’t matter that we do dance music.”
Flattering comparisons aside, we doubt this is the last we’ll hear on the button-pushing issue. DJ Sneak, it’s over to you.

Social Network : N.Y. Teacher Could Be Fired Over Controversial Facebook Post

A Brooklyn teacher could be out of a job very soon, after making some controversial comments about her students on Facebook.

Just a day after a 12-year-old girl drowned on a school field trip to the beach, fifth-grade teacher Christine Rubino posted a status update, implying that her students may deserve the same fate. "After today, I'm thinking the beach is a good trip for my class. I hate their guts," Rubino wrote. A friend soon commented, asking, "Wouldn't you throw a life jacket to little Kwami?" But the teacher said she wouldn't -- not even "for a million dollars."

One of Rubino's colleagues saw the post and alerted school authorities. After school investigator Richard Condon conducted a probe into the matter, Rubino was confronted, about six months after she posted the controversial status. At first, the teacher blamed the incident on a friend who had access to her account. A longtime friend later corroborated Rubino's claims, and took responsibility for the post. But school officials haven't bought her story.

Now, the teacher is in the midst of termination hearings, facing accusations of "conduct unbecoming a teacher" and witness tampering. (Rubino insists that her friend came to her defense without coercion.)

Insensitive as her comments may have been, some believe that termination would violate the teacher's right to privacy. "There's an expectation that this posting is to be shared with friends, not the general public," said Marshall Bellovin, a lawyer who specializes in teacher rights. "Therefore, any severe measure taken against a teacher, in my opinion, would be unfair."

Rubino, meanwhile, acknowledges that her post was inappropriate, but argues that it shouldn't jeopardize her 15-year teaching career. "It was something I said out of anger," Rubino told the New York Post. "I would never take my class to the beach. I would never hurt them."

NYC Officer Allegedly Lets Inmate Use Her Cell Phone

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A New York City correction officer is accused of bringing her cell phone into a jail and letting an inmate use it.

Rosalyn Wilkes, who worked at the Manhattan Detention Center, was charged on Monday with promoting prison contraband and taking her cell phone to work. She was suspended for 15 days and placed on modified duty with no inmate contact.

Prison rules prohibit officers from bringing their personal cell phones to work. Prosecutors say the inmate was in jail for weapons possession and robbery.

Taco Bell print ad responds to lawsuit over whether there’s meat in their meat

A class-action lawsuit was filed in California disputing how much meat is actually in the “meat” Taco Bell uses. Taco Bell, considering themselves a food company, is justifiably a bit upset at what this could do to their business. So now they’re fighting back with this print ad, which ran in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and others.

There seems to be certain ambiguities in the ad…for example, USDA inspected beef only has to have a certain percentage of beef, so there’s already some dilution there. And then they’re taking 88% of that USDA inspected beef and diluting it further. Is it only 35% beef like the lawsuit is claiming? Doubtful. But it’s not exactly like biting into the flesh of a live cow either.

Either way, some analysts are speculating that the results could be “humongously detrimental” to the Taco Bell brand. I find that hard to believe. Despite all of its efforts to advertise some of its “healthier” options, it’s still always going to be perceived as Taco Bell..the overly processed bit of deliciousness it’s always been. Should you eat Taco Bell every day? Probably not. Is it surprisingly not terrible for you, as long as you’re eating a reasonable amount and not one of those “OMG NOTHING PROCESSED” types? Yes, Taco Bell is perfectly acceptable…infinitely moreso than some of the dive-y Mexican places you’ll find across the country.

Case closed. For this defense of their brand, I recommend Taco Bell send me a coupon for 100 free tacos and a vat of fire sauce, please.

Ex-Swiss Banker Gives Data to WikiLeaks

LONDON — A former senior Swiss bank executive said on Monday that he had given the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, details of more than 2,000 prominent individuals and companies that he contends engaged in tax evasion and other possible criminal activity.

The WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange received CDs containing data on offshore bank account holders from former Swiss private banker Rudolf Elmer Monday in London.

Rudolf M. Elmer, who ran the Caribbean operations of the Swiss bank Julius Baer for eight years until he was dismissed in 2002, refused to identify any of the individuals or companies, but he told reporters at a news conference that about 40 politicians and “pillars of society” were among them.

He told The Observer newspaper over the weekend that those named in the documents come from “the U.S., Britain, Germany, Austria and Asia — from all over,” and include “business people, politicians, people who have made their living in the arts and multinational conglomerates — from both sides of the Atlantic.”

Mr. Elmer handed two computer disks to Mr. Assange at the news conference, the first significant public event the WikiLeaks founder has held since he was arrested in London in early December after Swedish prosecutors sought to have him extradited on charges of sexual crimes there. He has denied the charges but was briefly jailed last year before bail was granted.

Wearing the same dark blue suit he has worn through his legal battles, Mr. Assange said that WikiLeaks would verify and release the information, including the names, in as little as two weeks. He mentioned possible partnerships with financial news organizations and suggested he would consider turning the information over to Britain’s Serious Fraud Office, which investigates financial corruption.

Mr. Elmer, who previously provided documents from his former employer to national tax authorities including the Internal Revenue Service in the United States, said he had turned to WikiLeaks to “educate society” about what he considers an unfair system that serves the rich and aids those who seek to launder money.

His recent offers to provide further data to universities and governments were spurned, he said, and he thought that the Swiss media had failed to cover the substance of his accusations. “The man in the street needs to know how this system works,” he said, referring to the offshore trusts that many “high net worth individuals” around the world use to evade taxes.

Bank Julius Baer, a 120-year-old institution that is usually noted for its intense privacy, said in a statement that it denied all wrongdoing and suggested that Mr. Elmer was pursuing a “vendetta” to “discredit Julius Baer as well as clients in the eyes of the public.”

It accused him of using falsified documents, spreading baseless accusations and passing on “unlawfully acquired, respectively retained, documents to the media, and later also to WikiLeaks.”

On Monday, Mr. Elmer declined to say how he had obtained the documents. He was detained for 30 days in 2005 in connection with allegations that he falsified documents, violated Swiss banking secrecy laws and tried to coerce his former employers by threatening to disclose information. He faces trial in Switzerland on Wednesday, said his Swiss lawyer, Ganden Tethong Blattner, for the latter two charges and faces a possible sentence of eight months’ probation and a fine of $8,200.

WikiLeaks and Bank Julius Baer previously clashed in early 2008 when the antisecrecy organization published hundreds of documents pertaining to its offshore activities. The bank succeeded, briefly, in gaining a court order to shut down the WikiLeaks.org Web site. The injunction was subsequently overturned and the case was dropped.

The offshore banking industry has come under increasing pressure in recent years amid accusations that places like the Caribbean, with looser financial laws, allowed investors to avoid taxes and that some banks helped to create complex webs of companies and trust funds there to confuse tax authorities abroad.

In 2009, Bradley Birkenfeld, a former private banker for UBS, disclosed some of the industry’s illegal tactics and forced the bank to turn over details of several thousand client accounts to the I.R.S. as part of a legal settlement. UBS agreed to pay a $780 million fine and admitted criminal wrongdoing.

Still, Mr. Assange said in London on Monday, financial institutions usually “operate outside the rule of law” because of their economic power. WikiLeaks itself has been “economically censored,” he said, by companies like Visa and MasterCard, which stopped processing donations to it late last year in response to its release of hundreds of thousands of classified United States documents on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and thousands of State Department cables.

WikiLeaks, perhaps signaling a new focus, has also said it would release information from an American bank, thought to be from a Bank of America executive’s hard drive, early this year. But, Mr. Assange said, the site is not fully “open for public business” owing to the weight of the existing leaks it is struggling to process.

At the news conference, Mr. Assange declined to comment on the accusations of sexual abuse, brought by two women in Sweden, which have occupied much of his time in recent months. But he has strenuously denied any wrongdoing and has described the proceedings as “a smear campaign” meant to discredit him. He will appear in a British court for a comprehensive hearing on the matter on Feb. 7.

The United States is also widely thought to be conducting an investigation into Mr. Assange and WikiLeaks, in connection with the release of the classified government and military information.

Montel Williams Busted With Drug Pipe

Former talk show host Montel Williams was busted with drug paraphernalia at Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport, according to reports.

While passing through a security checkpoint at the airport on Tuesday, TSA officials found what they believed to be a pipe used for smoking pot. According to TMZ, there was no residue in the pipe.

Williams, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, has been a vocal advocate for medical marijuana in recent years, claiming it has been the most effective treatment for his chronic pain associated with the disease.

Williams, who founded the MS Foundation, a research and education-focused non-profit, in 2000, was fined $100 in 2003 when he was caught with similar marijuana accessories at a Detroit airport.

Williams' spokesperson released a statement saying, "He has prescriptions for many different medications for MS. One of the medications he has been prescribed to alleviate his chronic pain is medical marijuana."

After being briefly detained in Wisconsin after yesterday's incident, Williams paid a $484 fine and was allowed to resume his travel.

Criticism of Mayor Mounts

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday his administration fulfilled a promise to plow every city street, but elected officials and others insisted some streets never saw a plow before the 7 a.m. deadline, marking another setback for the beleaguered mayor.

Mr. Bloomberg, who on Friday completes the first year of his third four-year term as the chief executive of the nation's largest city, has been besieged by a number of embarrassing episodes in recent weeks, with some saying he's endangering his image as an expert manager.

Council Member Debi Rose of Staten Island, who met with the mayor during his tour Thursday of every borough outside Manhattan, said she believes the city's sluggish response to the post-Christmas blizzard has dealt a serious blow to the mayor's reputation.

"This could be the straw that breaks New York City's back in terms of how well they think, a good job, the mayor has done," said Ms. Rose.

"I was stranded for three days myself. I could not get out," Ms. Rose said. "Something went drastically wrong with this snow removal."

The mayor said the administration plans to conduct a full investigation into the city's response to the storm. That probe will include examining allegations that disgruntled members of the Department of Sanitation deliberately slowed the snow removal as a protest.

Armed with a movie camera and tripod, Queens resident Jamie Stuart filmed scenes from the Christmas blizzard that clobbered New York City. His film, "Idiot With a Tripod," pays tribute to Dziga Vertov's 1929 silent classic "Man With a Movie Camera."

The mayor and Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty on Thursday said they don't believe there was a coordinated slowdown.

"I don't think it took place but we're going to do an investigation to make sure that it didn't," Mr. Bloomberg said. "It would be an outrage if it took place. But I just don't know."

During a news conference in Queens, Mr. Bloomberg again conceded that his administration's response to the storm was both "inadequate and unacceptable," an about-face from his defiant stance during the early portion of the cleanup effort.

"Clearly the response to this storm has not met our standards or the standards that New Yorkers have come to expect from us," he said. "The long delays in plowing some of the city streets should not have happened. We're not making excuses."

At the same time, Mr. Bloomberg said the city met its commitment to plow every street, except those blocked by stranded vehicles, at least once by 7 a.m. Thursday.

The mayor estimated there were about a dozen of those blocked roads in one section of Brooklyn and a handful of others elsewhere.

Some city residents and elected officials disputed the mayor's contention.

"We still have quite a few blocks that have not been touched, still have quite a few blocks," Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said.

He added: "There is no excuse for this—absolutely no excuse. This was an outrage."

Moments after the mayor finished speaking, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, who hadn't been invited to speak, approached the lectern to dispute the mayor's remarks.

"Most of the roads, even where I live, there's still about four inches right where the cars and everything go," she said. During the last several days, she said, residents from nearly every section of Queens called her office, saying, "Where is the plow? Where is the plow?"

For the mayor, the poor response to the snow storm comes on the heels of federal prosecutors arresting six people on charges of stealing $80 million allocated to the city's long-delayed computerized payroll system, known as CityTime.

The mayor's critics have lambasted Mr. Bloomberg for failing to police the CityTime project. In recent months, the mayor has also taken heat from some for the city's uptick in homicides, his plans to close fire companies, the secretive process for selecting the new schools chancellor and for failing to stand up enough for the working poor.

"It's been all malaise, no magic, thus far in the third term, with a record number of working poor New Yorkers now relying on food stamps and feeling invisible to and forgotten by this mayor," said Dan Morris, a spokesman for a coalition seeking a living wage law.

A mayoral spokesman, Stu Loeser, responded by saying: "We're proud that New York City led the nation for job creation over the last year, often creating jobs at twice the rate of the rest of the country."

Mr. Bloomberg said on Thursday he believes his campaign to seek a third term was the right decision for both him and the city.

"One of the reasons I wanted to run again was that we're going to be going through some very difficult times and it's never easy to go through difficult times," he said. "Bad times require a dedication and a commitment and a desire to make sure that this city comes through."

The mayor said he's more committed than ever to lead the city. While he accepted some responsibility for some of the administration's shortcomings, he said, "There's an awful lot of good numbers out there, as well."

Mr. Markowitz, who supported the mayor's bid for a third term, said "this is not the shining moment" for Mr. Bloomberg.

"But in anyone's life, you have ups and downs," Mr. Markowitz said. "He'll be up again."

You know, the year just wouldn’t be complete unless a Fox News analyst delved into the sports world and made an asinine comment. This one comes courtesy of Tucker Carlson last night as he filled in on Sean Hannity’s show.

His target? That evil, murderous, dog-killing Mike Vick.

“I’m a Christian, I’ve made mistakes myself, I believe fervently in second chances,” Carlson said. “But Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did in a heartless and cruel way. And I think, personally, he should’ve been executed for that. He wasn’t, but the idea that the President of the United States would be getting behind someone who murdered dogs? Kind of beyond the pale.”

The only thing that was missing was Rush Limbaugh zonked up on Oxycontin screaming, “the media was desirous of a successful black quarterback” in the background.

Obama calls Eagles owner to congratulate him for signing Vick

Michael Vick(notes) has been getting support from all sides during his road to redemption. He's now getting it from the leader of the free world.

NBC's Peter King reports that Barack Obama called Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie earlier this week to congratulate him for giving Vick a second chance after his release from prison. According to King, the president said that released prisoners rarely receive a level playing field and that Vick's story could begin to change that.

Forget your political allegiances or feelings about Michael Vick and take a step back to think about this. The sitting president of the United States went out of his way to publicly praise a man who, 3 1/2 years ago, many thought would never play again in the NFL. Even the most ardent believers in Vick couldn't have fathomed a turn-around like this.

In retrospect it seems obvious that Vick would get a second chance in the NFL, but it wasn't so clear-cut back when he was lying to the commissioner, getting sternly admonished in federal court and serving out a sentence at Leavenworth. We tend to take for granted unbelievable events when they slowly unfold before our eyes. The step-by-step nature of these sorts of tales tend to minimize the shock when taken in over a long process. So though it now seems like it was all pre-destined to work out like this, it wasn't: Vick's rise and fall and rise is a truly stunning tale. He went from star to pariah to inmate to backup to MVP candidate to political prop for the leader of the free world all in a span of a couple years.

For Obama to praise Vick now shows a number of things, namely that uttering the quarterback's name is thought to be a safe political move. He's playing the best football of his life for a playoff team and was the second-leading vote getter for the Pro Bowl. At the moment, he's the model of redemption, someone worthy of praise.

Because, if you think about it, Vick got that "second chance" from Lurie 16 months ago. There was no phone call from the president then. Praising Vick at that time would have been a political third rail. But now that Vick is playing great and most people seem to have either forgiven him or stopped caring about his transgressions, it's a shrewd political move. After what could be termed a rough two years in office, the president is looking for a second chance from the people who have turned against him over the past two years. Supporting a huge star like Vick could help with the president's recent image problems. It may not register much nationally, but it couldn't hurt in Pennsylvania. After all, it's a swing state and 2012 is just around the corner

Hot 97 Suspends DJ Cipha Sounds for Haitian Comment

On-air personality DJ Cipha Sounds has been suspended from his post at New York City's Hot 97 radio station after making a controversial comment earlier this week, which triggered members of the Haitian community to boycott the station.

Cipha, who co-hosts the station's morning show alongside hip-hop personality Peter Rosenberg, outraged Haitian listeners after making the joke, "The reason I'm HIV negative is 'cause I don't mess with Haitian girls." Although Cipha was quick to issue a full, on-air apology after making what he admitted was a "tasteless" joke, the station was immediately flooded with complaints from listeners.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the 34-year-old morning show host would be suspended indefinitely from his post at the station. A representative for Hot 97 explained that despite Cipha's apology, it was important to show listeners that their concerns were taken seriously. "Cipha made an immediate public apology and recognizes his insensitivity and the negative impact his comments have on all Haitians," explained Alex Cameron, SVP/Market Manager of Emmis-New York, the company which owns the station. "The Haitian community is an important part of our listenership whom we respect and value. The suspension is an indication of the importance we place on delivering a product that respects our Haitian audience." The DJ will also partake in "sensitivity training" that focuses on Haiti and the serious nature of the HIV/AIDS problem within the country.

DJ Cipha Sounds is a co-host of 'The Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg Show,' which airs weekdays morning from 5AM to 10AM on Hot 97.

Jets coach admits to tripping Dolphins player on sidelines

The way the New York Jets have been playing lately, they definitely needed a “leg-up” on the competition. They just never thought it would come in the form of coach Sal Alosi actively participating in plays.

Watch this clip below as Dolphins special teamer Nolan Carroll streaks down the sidelines to cover a punt and cameras catching Alosi red-handed trying to trip him.

Alosi has sinced apologized for the incident releasing this statement Sunday night:

“I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment,” Alosi said in a statement. “My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for. I spoke to Coach [Tony] Sparano and Nolan Carroll to apologize before they took off. I have also apologized to Woody [Johnson], Mike [Tannenbaum] and Rex [Ryan]. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows.

No disciplinary action has been taken as of yet, but you have to expect the Jets and/or the NFL to drop the hammer on him pretty soon. Maybe not an outright firing, but a suspension for the rest of the season seems extremely likely.

Alosi has been working in the NFL as a strength coach for nine years now and as a former player himself in the collegiate ranks, he’s more than aware of what constitutes a cheap shot.

Suffice to say, this one was the lowest of the low.
