Music : Swedish House Mafia’s final Tomorrowland set in 2012

One year ago Swedish House Mafia was still, well, Swedish House Mafia. And the industry’s biggest supergroup had once called the industry’s biggest festival home. On the brink of the ninth annual Tomorrowland, rewind a mere 365 days back towards the trio’s 2012 closing set. Axwell, Ingrosso, and Angello had brought their familiar originals and mash ups to a climactic setting to Belgium, testing showtime antics on a massive crowd before doing so on their One Last Tour. DJS : Check out Legendary Producer, Giorgio Moroder's first-ever DJ set

The 2013 Red Bull Music Academy is currently stationed in New York, with workshops, panels and of course parties taking over the sleepless city. On Monday night, at Output in Brooklyn , dancers were treated to a very special session of Francois K’s long-running Deep Space.

 

As well as a set from the host, there was Giorgio Moroder, playing what was billed as his first-ever DJ appearance. The legendary producer rolled out some of his finest moments including Donna Summer’s I Feel Love, Bad Girls, One The Radio and his recent entry on Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, Giorgio By Moroder. It was recorded for RBMA Radio so you can listen below.
Even better, the New York gig wasn’t a one-off. “I am becoming a DJ…and I don’t know why, really,” Moroder cheerfully told Time Out New York recently, adding that he’s got an agent for DJing and a set booked in Japan. He’s also been working with Avicii, just like fellow Random Access Memories collaborator Nile Rodgers.
“I feel like DJs aren’t just the new stars; the really good ones are so powerful,” Moroder added to Time Out. “I was in Ibiza last summer, and it was incredible. It’s like a conductor, telling the musicians, ‘Go slow now. Go loud now.’ DJs are doing the same thing. I’m not there yet, but I hope it will happen.”

Ultra 2013: Richie Hawtin Delivers Sensory Overload, No Bottle Anthems

 

This year's main stage at Ultra Music Festival has seemed particularly heavy on so-called "confetti house," the lineup rife with marquee names from VIP-heavy megaclubs. But the (relatively) more underground sounds of dance music -- or at least those not so concerned with encouraging bottle sales -- lived on at a few other tents. The Carl Cox and Friends stages at Ultra 2013, two this past Friday and one on Saturday, continue to serve as a refuge for deeper, techier sounds at the festival.




As such, one of the rare treats came early Saturday evening with an appearance by techno god Richie Hawtin. Was a mass-appeal festival with shortened DJ slots the best place to hear him play? Not really -- the best Hawtin sets unfurl over the course of a club night and into the wee hours. Still, by Ultra terms, his allotted two hours seemed like a luxurious sprawl, with the full kind of narrative arc that rewards dancers who stick it out to the finish.
Hawtin's been mocked for helping create the trend for superminimal techno, but played at ear-crushing volumes, the sound yesterday was pleasantly full and dubby, locking into a robot groove from the start. Subtle variations in the tracks, carefully crescendoing song selection, and of course seamless mixing kept things moving without the flash gimmicks of many DJs on the main stage.



And yes, the kids still loved it -- thousands of revelers of a wide spread of ages packed the tent from the beginning, lost in careful concentration on the four-four. There wasn't a single easy vocal hook here, yet it was hard to turn away as Hawtin's set continued on its twists and turns until it reached a frenzied peak right after sundown.
Seemingly all of a sudden, things got very psychedelic. Bass pounded, the mid-range clanks and squeals ground along, and the hectagonal screens on the tent's ceiling lowered in an explosion of psychedelic vocals. It was totally possible to get a kind of euphoric high on the sensory overload, no bottle anthems required.

EDM : Tommie Sunshine takes on ‘underground nut-jobs’ with ‘Where's The #EDM?’ mix

In his own words, the last few weeks have been “pandemonium” for hirsute dance music ambassador Tommie Sunshine. At the Amsterdam Dance Event last September, inthemix heard Sunshine expertly lead the panel ‘The United States Of EDM’, easily one of the most well-attended during the conference. Throughout the panel, the Chicago-bred DJ returned to the point that the U.S. ‘EDM’ boom should be welcomed, not agonised about.
“This is not a conversation anymore, it just isn’t,” he told the room. “There is plenty of pie for everybody. If you want to be David Guetta and write pop records, that’s fine. If you want to be Seth Troxler and freak out and play crazy music and eight-hour sets, there’s plenty of room for that. They just don’t need to exist in the same place.”
Since then, Sunshine has kept up his side of the argument, largely on his superhumanly prolific Twitter account and via a Guest Editorial for The Huffington Post, ‘EDM Is Growing Up’. Early last week, he praised the Platinum success of Swedish House Mafia’s single Don’t You Worry Child as a sign of big things for dance music in 2013. The comment sparked a discussion with Ed Simons of the Chemical Brothers, who dismissed the song as “drivel” that “sounds like Nickelback”. As Sunshine put it at the time: “Why is everyone from the roots of this music so fucking salty about the ones who are going mainstream?”

Tommie Sunshine’s position that “there’s plenty of pie for everybody” continues to stir up debate. Now the DJ has put together a new DJ mix to address his detractors. The Soundcloud mix – titled ‘Where’s The #EDM?’ and adorned with a cut-out of Pitbull’s face – is an ode to his Chicago house roots, before the flammable term ‘EDM’ was even on the radar. The likes of Jesse Rose, Solomun, Tiger Stripes and Duke Dumont all make the cut.
“In all of the pandemonium of the last few weeks I felt it necessary to make a mix that reflects my roots in Chicago & shows all the Underground nut jobs who berated me that I do, in fact, know the difference between EDM & House Music,” he writes. “This is a listening mix mean to be enjoyed loud. Make no mistake that I’m going this direction with my live sets for 2013; this is just a love letter to the city that made me want to be a DJ. These artists above are some of the best ones making this deep style & their catalogs are worth exploring. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did making it. I hope you dance as much as I did while making it. This is House Music. Enjoy.”
