EDM News : Ultra Music Festival Phase 2: Skrillex, Azelia Banks, Sleigh Bells

Skrillex performs during day 3 of the Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival on June 9, 2012 in Manchester, Tennessee.

The Ultra Music Festival has unveiled the second phase of its massive lineup of DJs, performers and bands that will take over Miami for two weekends in March, with highlights including EDM giants Skrillex (via his side project Dog Blood) and Martin Solveig, rappers Azelia Banks and Snoop Dogg, and rock band Sleigh Bells.

Downtown Miami's Bayfront Park will play host to Ultra over the weekends of March 15-17 and March 22-24. It's the first year of the expanded festival, now in its 15th year.

New additions to the Ultra lineup include Paul Van Dyk, The Weeknd, Pretty Lights, Steve Aoki, Porter Robinson, Madeon and Dog Blood, the side project of Skrillex and Boys Noize.

They join previously announced acts deadmau5, Tiƫsto, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, Above & Beyond, Afrojack, Bassnectar, Calvin Harris, Fatboy Slim and Kaskade. There will also be live sets by Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, Hot Chip, Matt & Kim and Yeasayer.

One of the centerpieces of this year's fest will be main stage sets by Swedish House Mafia, who have chosen Ultra as the final show of their "One Last Tour." They'll play on the first night of the 2-weekend event as well as the final night.

Last year's festival featured headliner performances from EDM heavyweights David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Kaskade, but the biggest moment came courtesy of Madonna, who made a surprise appearance with then-newcomer Avicii.

Ultra Fest Generates $79 Million Annually for Miami Economy: Can EDM Save the Country?

RussellFaibischMiamiPeopleIssue2011.jpg
Ultra honcho Russell Faibisch.
What's the quickest way to dump several million dollars into a local economy, create nearly 1,000 jobs, and generate upwards of $10 million in federal, state, and local taxes?

Simple, gather a bunch of electronic dance music artists and drop them in the middle of Downtown Miami, then add 165,000 screaming fans and watch it rain $100 bills.

According to a new study conducted by the Washington Economics Group and commissioned by Ultra Music Festival, the EDM fest's annual economic impact on Miami-Dade County is an astounding $79 million, including $32 in labor income and $50 million in GDP contributions.

"We always knew from the huge crowds that we draw that we had a major impact on our local economy, but we did not realize it was this huge," UMF creator and executive director Russell Faibisch said in a statement. "Last year people in all 50 states and more than 75 countries bought tickets to attend."

Of the estimated 165,000 annual attendees, WEG reports that nearly 60 percent come from outside of Miami-Dade, spending an average of about $262 a day on lodging, food, transportation, and shopping for stuff like Vick's inhalers, pacifiers, and furry boots.

Faibisch says, "We see ourselves as partners in the economic prosperity for Miami-Dade County and hope to continue and expand our contribution to the magic that makes our area unique."

Who knows, maybe the presidential candidates will apply Faibisch's fiscal policies and free the country from our current economic woes.

EDM's not just good for the club, bro. It's epic for the economy.

Ultra Music Festival Crime: 71 Arrested, 48 Charged With Felonies

Whether they popped too many pills, knocked back too many Buds, or maybe even found a little "Molly" with Madonna, it was inevitable: A small portion of the blissed-out masses that packed Bayfront for Ultra Music Festival ended their weekend in a paddy wagon. Riptide has tracked down the arrest numbers, and 71 revelers were arrested during this year's Ultra; 48 were charged with felonies, mostly for drug possession.

No one had a worse weekend, though, than Evan Eisler Oberfelder. The 23-year-old Texan was inexplicably nude near Bayfront when a cab ran over and seriously wounded him; when police officers stopped to help, Oberfelder became enraged, declared "I hate the police," and fought them. He ended up Tasered, in the hospital with critical injuries, and charged with multiple felonies.

Here are the arrest stats from the Miami Police Department during the festival's three-day run, via Napier Velazquez, a department spokesman.
Total arrests 71, felony 48 and misdemeanor is 23.

Narcotics 45

Trespassing 9

Disorderly 5

Conducting Buss w/o 5

Obstructing 2

Robbery 2

Battery 1

Misc 2

Adults 66

Juveniles 5

It's worth noting: Considering the sheer number of people packed into downtown for the festival, 71 arrests isn't a massive number.

That one battery case is the only truly bizarre drama. Police initially responded to a call on North Bayshore Drive, a few blocks north of Ultra's main stage, at 5:23 Saturday morning. A caller reported Evan Eisler Oberfelder had been hit by a cab that sped off.

But when a good Samaritan stopped to help, Oberfelder began punching the man and eventually kicked him in the groin. When police arrived, Oberfelder was "nude and bleeding from an apparent head injury," police say, and tried to jump on top of a cruiser.

Police zapped him with multiple Tasers, but the voltage didn't slow Oberfelder. He brawled with the cops and broke one officer's arm before he was finally subdued and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Oberfelder has been charged with five felonies, including battery on a law enforcement officer. He remained in the hospital as of Monday.

Deadmau5 to Madonna: "Fuck Off, You Fucking Idiot"

Deadmau5MadonnaUltraMusicFestivalFuckOff.jpg

Uh-oh, Deadmau5 is pissed off again.

The last time he unleashed his fury on Ultra Music Festival in a 12-minute YouTube rant, slamming the electronic fest for ticket prices and exclusivity contracts.

But now he's angry at the Queen of Pop, Madonna, for referencing Ecstasy (AKA Molly) during her intro of Avicii at Ultra Music Festival.

Early this morning on his Facebook wall, Deadmau5 wrote: "very classy there madonna. 'HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???'"

"such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra. quite the f'n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! fucking cant smack my head hard enough right now."

Madonna's use of the word Molly seems to be the only thing anyone remembers from her speech at Ultra. Now, we aren't going to kid ourselves and say that the recreational drug isn't a part of the festival. But the pandering was a little awkward, especially coming from a 53-year-old mother of four who seems to have lost her flair for being controversial.

"seriously, i giveth not a fucking single FUCK for slating on madonna for reaching an entirely NEW level of idiocy," Deadmau5 added. "i can appriciate her meteoric career, and all good deeds done, but WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? That's your big contribution to EDM? Thats your big message to ultra attendies? hipsterspeak for looking for drugs? fuck off you fucking IDIOT. fuck."

We don't necessarily disagree with Zimmerman. No doubt, Madonna's speech reeked of "Look at me, I'm so cool!" desperation. Her new album's name is MDNA, for fuck's sake, which is a play on MDMA, another word for Ecstasy.

Of course, it's one thing to piss off Ultra Music Festival, and an entirely different thing to piss of Esther. How will she respond? Who knows. Maybe she doesn't care. But it's safe to bet she isn't going to call on Deadmau5's production services any time soon.

Here is the full Facebook rant.

Deadmau5 also went on to pen a long opus on Tumblr about Madonna's speech, his own past drug use, and the value of responsibility:

Responsibility
Via deadmau5.tumblr.com

This is certainly what it should be about, and it's what im about regarding the Madonna issue.

Whether i like it or not, and like every other walk of life, whether you're becoming an adult, or climbing up the corporate ladder, or blazing a path in your chosen profession, im in a position now where i should be responsible. And yup... i should be a little more careful about what i advocate, and i certainly try to be. being an advocate of something or another certainly has it's place... drawing promotion towards a good cause, enabling others to do what they desire to do, help others to create something, etc. and all that other good shit.

Im not perfect. i have my vices, and some of them are probably more harmful than a recreational drug or two... but i do know that i am at the very least morally obligated not to blatantly inflict or advocate anything that's detrimental to society, others health, etc. my last rant has yielded some interesting points and arguments from both camps no doubt, but i should at least be clear on where i stand with advocacy (which im almost certain isnt even a word).

I smoke cigarettes. yeah, it's shitty i know, and its a personal problem that i struggle with... and i know how much it sucks, so my tour isnt exactly sponsored by a cowboy of sorts. I drink a little bit too, which im sure has killed more people than double the combined amount of overdoses on any recreational drug you can name.... so, i try to make an effort as not to blatantly condone it in situations where the youngins are around. and trust me, the mau5 horde has plenty of little ones... So, i dont see the dire need to be a constant dickfuck and stamp my vices all over my media outlets. Sometimes it happens, but, of course, my intent isnt to make any look cool or desireable.

Now, weve taken EDM so far in the past decade, so goddamned far. It really hurts me to see rampant ADVOCATION of extreme bullshit lifestyles to a genre that spans pretty much any age gap these days. Of course, ill always have my opinions about this or that... and yeah, its my personal choice not to do drugs, but im not on a fucking crusade to stamp out other peoples personal choices by no means. fuck being a crusader. Im not pro, or anti drug... but... ill easily let you know that im pro-responsibility.

Its just that simple... you can have an excellent standard of life providing you had a sense of responsibility to yourself, and those around you, REGARDLESS of whatever choices you make in your life... either good or bad (which is the opinion part). I just feel like ive been kicked in the balls for a dollar. I've always been into electronic music, as far back as i can remember... and around the beginning, i really do remember the times the events i loved were pretty much outlawed by my city simply due to its speculated over-excessive drug use, and the media coverage that everyone loves to lap up around it. Yeah, that bummed me out... kinda made me feel like... how could something so damn interesting, artful, fun and just plain cool, be frowned upon by most....

but look at us now, allthough not completely, and never like to be completely, the dark veil has been lifted slightly and the music and good times and technology is starting to shine through more and more than "the latest breaking news about such and such a drug found only at these underground TECHNO RAVES - Tonight on fox!" still, we have, and will always have personal choice. Thats how our lives are shaped... through the good or bad choices we make. we learn every day from them... but theyre ours to make, and its our responsibility to make the right ones for each of ourselves. Not to be pandered down to us in metaphorical pill form from BIG voices as a marketing scheme to "fit in" with todays young and "hip" crowd to sell a fuckin CD.

So, if you can be pandered with MDMA refrences, then at least pander your own ass with a good sense of responsibility which will enable you to make the personal choices that are right for YOU... then i wont have to feel like a fucking moron on a stage because you paid money to listen to some warm humming sounds high as fuck. Besides, one day ill get older, and i dont want a bunch of fucking irresponsible fuckheads on my lawn. RESPONSIBLE fuckbags, much preferred... but will still be asked to gtfo off my lawn for being a fuckbag all the same.
