Tech : LG's DM50D HDTV promotes a passive 3D lifestyle

LG is talking up its forthcoming DM50D 3D HDTV -- not a lot, mind you, but just enough to get us interested. The company offered up a largely spec-free press release on the forthcoming set, heralding the adoption of passive 3D glasses, "Flicker Free" capabilities borrowed from its Cinema 3D TV line, and double the brightness of conventional 3D sets. The display has a built-in DTV turner, HDMI capabilities for connecting with 3D-capable consoles and the like, and the ability to view images and videos directly from a USB flash drive. It'll be hitting Europe in July, with more of the world getting a crack at it later.

Seoul, Jun. 28, 2011 -- LG Electronics (LG) today introduces its next generation DM50D monitor, which includes all the advantages found on LG's game-changing CINEMA 3D TVs in a form factor that fits easily on a desktop. The flicker-free, bright images and lightweight 3D glasses that customers have come to associate with CINEMA 3D can all be found on the DM50D, including Full HDTV. The DM50D is the perfect platform for 3D gaming and movie watching.

"Our consumer research showed that while interest in 3D monitors was high, there were certain misgivings about the cumbersome glasses, reported health concerns and lack of 3D content," said Si-hwan Park, vice president of the monitor division at LG's Home Entertainment Company. "Through CINEMA 3D technology, the DM50D addresses all of these concerns, leaving users free to be completely immersed in the best quality 3D content and gaming on any monitor on the market today."

Like CINEMA 3D TVs, the DM50D monitor is also "Flicker Free" certified by European quality assurance agencies TÜV and Intertek. As well as producing wonderfully smooth 3D images, the lack of flicker and low crosstalk means an end to the dizziness and headaches users could sometimes experience on conventional 3D screens.

The DM50D boasts the ultimate in 3D brightness, more than double that of conventional 3D monitors. What's more, the glasses – also available as a clip-on for corrective glasses wearers – are extremely light, have no batteries and never need to be recharged. This makes them very comfortable to wear even for long work sessions or movie marathons. The DM50D 3D glasses are very affordably priced and are compatible with all of CINEMA 3D products.The DM50D also comes with a built-in 2D to 3D conversion feature so viewers can always watch top-quality 3D content on the fly. The conversion function works whether or not the monitor is connected to a PC and kicks in automatically on games to deliver the ultimate in 3D entertainment.

Entertainment News : Gilbert Gottfried Fired As Aflac Duck After Japanese Tsunami Tweets

With some wildly inappropriate tweets, the quack has been silenced.
Comedian Gilbert Gottfried sent out a slate of offensive twitter missives about the tragic Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and instead of drawing laughs, it cost him his job. The longtime voice of the iconic Aflac Duck, Gottfried was fired by the insurance company on Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Gilbert's recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac," the company, which does 75% of its business in Japan, said in a statement. "There is no place for anything but compassion and concern during these difficult times."
Gottfried's tweets certainly didn't show compassion. Buzzfeed compiled screen captures of the tweets, which were later deleted from the comedian's feed. Amongst the worst:
"I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, "They'll be another one floating by any minute now."
"I was talking to my Japanese real estate agent. I said 'is there a school in this area.' She said 'not now, but just wait.'"

Grem is a dented, rusty orange AMC Gremlin. After years of being dismissed for his design, even being called a "lemon," Grem has a big chip on his fender that has led him to the underworld of international espionage. As a henchman for a villainous boss Professor Z, Grem and his partner-in-crime Acer are trying to sabotage the World Grand Prix and the famous race cars competing in it. When Grem and Acer mistake Mater for an American agent with important top-secret information, the ruthless lemons set out on a round-the-globe chase to stop Mater from foiling their evil scheme.

Acer has always felt like an outcast in the car world. The beat-up green AMC Pacer joined forces with fellow "lemon" cars as henchmen for the devious Professor Z, whose clandestine mission is to wreak havoc at the highly visible World Grand Prix. Acer must hunt down the American and British secret agents who've stolen crucial information about Professor Z's underhanded plot-his primary target just happens to be Mater, who's been mistaken for a spy. Acer tries very hard to be a tough guy, but he's over-eager compared to his no-nonsense accomplice Grem.

Tech : Playboy Is Coming to the iPad, And It Won't Be Censored

Apple may have a strict and widely ridiculed policy on keeping "adult" material out of its App Store, but it's apparently willing to make an exception for Playboy.

Yesterday, Playboy founder and world's greatest granddad Hugh Hefner cheerfully announced that his gentleman's magazine will soon be available on the iPad, in its entirety. "Big news! Playboy--both old & new--will be available on iPad beginning in March," Hef tweeted yesterday. The new iPad for Playboy app will reportedly feature every issue ever released, although details on the launch, unlike most Playboy models, remain fuzzy. Hefner did, however, confirm that the e-mag would be completely uncensored, much to the delight of everyone who hasn't discovered Internet porn.

Entertaiment : Regis Philbin retiring from 'Live' prompts question of who could replace him on ABC show

With Regis Philbin leaving "Live with Regis and Kelly" later this year, ABC-Disney is set to name a replacement to join his co-host of ten years, Kelly Ripa.

Larry King has put his name forward, offering to fill Regis' chair for a while if needed. But while the suspendered-one had his moment, that was about 20 years ago.

Here, the eight guys to sit opposite Kelly Ripa.

• Mark Consuelos: Mr. Ripa (who has been married to Kelly since 1996; the couple has three children) is the only former Philbin fill-in who appears to have no other commitments, though he is set to star in an ABC comedy he and Ripa are developing called "Port Love." The 39-year-old "All My Children" alum has hosted two NBC dating shows, has filled in for Philbin several times and, obviously, has chemistry with Ripa. He is also pretty easy on the eyes.

• Anderson Cooper: The anchor for CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" has the advantage of working in New York and having a long history in journalism. He co-hosted the show with Ripa in 2007 to much success while Philbin underwent triple-bypass heart surgery, though he recently announced that he will start hosting his own talk show, "Anderson," in September.

• Jeff Probst: After Ryan Seacrest, the 48-year-old host of "Survivor" is the most qualified for another hosting job. He has filled in for Philbin several times and, in 2005, the "Live" host joked that Probst was aiming to take over from him. The only hitch? As of February of last year, the three-time Emmy Award winner had signed on to host two more seasons of "Survivor."

• Ryan Seacrest: Famous for juggling his duties on E!, "American Idol" and his own radio show in Los Angeles, Seacrest would take over Philbin's title of "most hardworking man in show business" if he were to take the job located in New York. He won a Daytime Emmy in 2006 for co-hosting the 2005 Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade with Philbin and Ripa and filled in for the former. In 2008, reports circulated that he would be replacing Philbin as host of the show.

• Neil Patrick Harris: The star of "How I Met Your Mother," who filled in for Philbin as recently as Jan. 7, has proven his hosting chops are the crème de la crème having hosted the Tony Awards, the Emmy Awards and appearing at the Academy Awards. But would he give up his day job as the award-winning member of the "Mother" cast?

• Jeff Gordon: He has already co-hosted the show over ten times and in 2003 Gordon became the first NASCAR driver to host "Saturday Night Live." Considered one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers, the 39-year-old Californian may want to move on from racing as he has already been indicted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.

• Ricky Gervais: If ABC has plans to shake things up, British comedian Ricky Gervais would fit the bill. The 49-year-old "Office" creator proved to be a boon for the Golden Globes on Sunday night, ripping apart Hollywood and slightly raising the ratings as host for the second time. But he may have proven himself to be a bit too controversial for "Live" viewers.

• Wayne Brady: The only minority next to Consuelos, Brady has proven he can think on his feet as a regular on the improvisational comedy series "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" He has also proven himself as a host, having helmed his own daytime talk show for three years, and hosted "Don't Forget the Lyrics!" for two years. He currently hosts CBS' "Let's Make a Deal" in Los Angeles.

Gaming : Pac-Man reality TV show coming, and not a moment too soon

Not since Hollywood Reporter told us about a possible Asteroids bio-pic have we been excited about a film or TV show: Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Merv Griffin Entertainment has hammered out a deal with Namco Bandai to develop a reality TV show based on Pac-Man. Envisioned by Merv Griffin Entertainment's president of TV Roy Bank as something "big" and "crazy" like Wipeout or Fear Factor, the company wants "to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world's biggest game of tag to television." If this doesn't sound like the definition of a mid-season replacement, we don't know what is.

Entertainment - Green Hornet,’ ‘Dilemma,’ and ‘Ong Bak 3’ All Hit the Theaters

Today's big movie release is "The Green Hornet," starring Seth Rogen (lost a ton of weight, grew some weird sideburns), Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, and Jay Chou. Rogen claims his research for his "low-budget bumbling Batman" was studying the life of Paris Hilton and other spoiled heiresses and heirs. Funnyguy Rogen and eclectic director Michael Gondry should bring a new dimension to the familiar superhero formula.

In "The Dilemma," Vince Vaughn spies the wife (Winona Ryder) of his best friend, Kevin James, cheating on him and has to decide whether or not to alert his pal. Hilarity and various hijinx ensue. The movie co-stars the beautiful Jennifer Connelly as Vaughn's wife and is directed by Ron Howard.

"Ong Bak 3" is the third in the Thai movie series, in which the hero Tien (who has lost his fighting powers) is captured, beaten, and eventually saved and returned to his village. The movie explores his journey through meditation to regain his powers, his wrestle with his Karma, and culminates in his final duel with his arch-nemesis. For the action/foreign movie enthusiast, but expect more sweet fight action sequences than annoying subtitles.
